C.M. Wofford Obituary

C.M. "Tip" Wofford, 89, of Paso Robles died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at a Templeton care center. A private family graveside service will be held at Atascadero District Cemetery. A public memorial celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Colony Hall, 3600 El Camino Real, behind Best Western Colony Inn, in Atascadero. The Rev. Wr'near Wilcox will officiate. Mr. Wofford was born March 6, 1913, in Lavern, Okla., to Jenny Mae Beaman and William Pinkney Wofford, the only boy of eight children. He grew up in Hennessey, Okla. He graduated from Hennessey High School in 1932, and attended University of Oklahoma at Norman. He married Loretta O'Haver in 1935, and they moved to California in 1936. They lived in southern California, mainly in Pasadena, Arcadia, and Hacienda Heights, for 50 years. They moved to Paso Robles in 1987. Mr. Wofford worked for Clayton Manufacturing Company in El Monte for close to 50 years. He was instrumental in setting up the Quality Control for Maquiladora Clamq in Tijuana, Baha California, in the early 1980s, as a member of the Clayton Company. Mr. Wofford served for seven years on the National Board of Directors of Little League Baseball. He was a driving force in developing Little League and Pony League Baseball in Arcadia and surrounding southern California communities. He was a past member of Pasadena JayCees (Jr. Chambers of Commerce), a president of the Arcadia Lions Club for two years, a member of Arcadia Parks and Recreation Commission, a charter member of "PALS" (Partners in Assistance League) of San Luis Obispo County, a volunteer for the North County Women's Shelter and Resource Center, a volunteer for Coats for Kids, and a volunteer for Options of San Luis Obispo County. He and his wife belonged to a square dance group organized to try out new and innovative routines for a professional square dance caller. They belonged to a square dance group in Arcadia for years. Mr. Wofford is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Loretta; daughter Barbie Butz and husband John of Atascadero; son Bill Wofford and wife Freda of Capetown, South Africa; grandchildren, Doug Butz and wife Michelle of Atascadero, Dave Butz and wife Shannon of Paso Robles, Dan Butz and wife Andrea of Templeton, Emily Wofford of Capetown, and Belinda Wofford of Wellington, New Zealand; great-grandchildren, Jenna, Makay, Kelsey, Breanna, Josh, Nick, Madison, Meredith, Justin, Morgan, Jaret, and Jennifer, all of the North County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County for Operation School Bell in care of Ann Melvin, 10005 Old Morro Road East, Atascadero, 93422. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Roses of Atascadero.
