My memories surrounding lovely Carol are highlighted by her kind and playful spirit. I met her at the Cambria library many years ago, having fun with her at art events around Cambria and own a gorgeous three-dimensional floral artwork she made. At Hearst Castle in the Living History Program, Carol fit into all of the petite clothes and had countless clothing choices. I said to her that we could make a heck of a 30s fashion book if we pictures of her in everything she had ever worn. I recall one green and pink floral outfit matched with green gloves that I loved seeing her in. I enjoyed her expressive laugh and great sense of humor. She was a super dedicated and dependable volunteer. I remember when she worked at the Hearst Castle ticket office and thought she looked wonderful in her uniform. She enjoyed her sports car and retirement which made me glad for her.
She went too soon!
God Bless her dear soul.

Carol had a fun spirit, friendly smile, and a big heart. I had the pleasure of working with her in the Living History program at Hearst Castle for over ten years. She had already been in the program for years when I began. Her petite and slender form was able to inhabit many of the elegant 1930s clothes of the collection. Over the years she wore hundreds of combinations, so many that I thought a great book of 30s fashions could be made if her photo had been taken every night she volunteered. She formed great friendships with other volunteers and they all brought joy and dreamy fantasy to the visitors, who observed them playing cards, drinking faux cocktails, and having conversations. I have a three-dimensional artwork of flowers she painted and cut that is exquisite. Just like she was. I never saw her home but knew it was beautiful, because we spoke of it and she described things with childlike wonder.
Goodbye Carol, my lovely friend with the ready laugh, sweet voice and kind soul. I will forever remember you. Be free!
Much Love,
Tim Mayer

I knew Carol first from ASH and then CMC, but more importantly from the Living History program at Hearst Castle. Carol was a kind and sensitive soul, and such an interesting person once you got to know her. There were many facets to her life experiences that few people knew. One day we drove up to Monterey for lunch and drove back through Big Sur, spotting condors overhead. She dearly loved her dog Abby and I hope Abby is now in a loving home. I'm glad I could get to know Carol better. Sadly, the pandemic closed the Castle and we didn't see each other after March 2020. Now it is too late. Carol, may you rest in peace.
