Charles Briles Obituary

Charles Briles Former TV and movie actor and stage director Charles "Chuck" Briles, formerly of Cambria, passed away at age 70 on June 12, 2016. Born in Gardena, Calif., Chuck was bitten by the acting bug at a young age. He performed as a teenager with the Kentwood Players of the Westchester Playhouse for several years; launching him on a professional acting career. Chuck performed in over 45 TV shows and movies. He was an original cast member of the popular television series "The Big Valley," playing Eugene Barkley, the youngest son of family matriarch Barbara Stanwyck. He also played a supporting role in the MGM Elvis Presley movie "The Trouble with Girls" in 1969. As an adult he turned his talent toward directing, winning many stage directing awards in Southern California. Chuck was also a highly successful writer, producer, and director of Industrial films for some 24 years with the Northrop Corporation of California. He was a talented, creative, and proud lifelong member of The Screen Actors Guild (SAG/AFTRA). He will be greatly missed by his family, colleagues, and friends. He is survived by his wife Kathy, of Orcutt, Calif.; his sister Carolyn Renno; sons Jason and Mike, and six grandchildren. A Celebration of his Life will take place this October in his beloved Cambria. Sign his guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries

Thank you sir, for sacrificing part of your TV acting career to serve our country. Many talk the talk, but few walk the walk.

That was some sacrifice in the turbulent 1960's.

Signed,

A Recent Fan of TBV who appreciates all the episodes you were in as a reminder that the rest was denied you because of your sacrifice for our country.

God Bless !

Charlie and I were both members of Boy Scout group 797 in Gardena, California. Charlie“s dad would bring him over to my house and we would spend the afternoons playing magic tricks mostly with playing cards on each other. We also went on several camping trips together where we would talk about the cute girls that were staying at the same campgrounds that we were. All this was when we were 11/13 years old.

Hello Chuck,
I finally told the BVWD how I came to talk to you, and about the Birthday book we sent you, I have kept your book on your getting into acting and the bits you put in.. I guess in a way I still have to prove being able to email and the chats happened.. MY inner child just has to see it was true.
They have sort of stopped the YAhoo site you can get on and read some of the emails, but it is no longer opened to be apart of a group.. and I sort of miss it.
it is so strange to think on the worse day 9 11 would take me on a internet trip and and end up where our roads would meet.
I keep your family in good thoughts as I do Diane. I know this is silly but Just wanted you to know you have not been forgotten I have a few stories on BVWD with you as the main character.. and in one Gene is a doctor who get's to fly in
airplane..
Hope you and all the actors you worked with are having a good chat. Oh took a while but I did get to see Trouble with Girls.. Enjoyed it.
Just Cyn Ann

Chuck Briles and I were LACC together in the early 60's. He was compassionate, honorable, funny, and a very talented actor. I remember how happy we all were when he landed on THE BIG VALLEY. He was so deserving of that break at that age. I worked with him a time or two and it was a joy. He was a special guy.

August 27, 2019

Growing up, I watched him on both Petticoat Junction & the Big Valley. Always thought he needed a bigger personality in the big valley.

He was quite an actor who never really got the chance to show his talent. I remember him as the fun loving Eugene Barkley on the Big Valley. Rest in peace sir.

Dear Charlie, I am so sorry to hear of your passing. We both graduated from Gardena High in 1963. I was happy to hear that you had been cast as the youngest son on The Big Valley. I even saw you one day on the set in 1963. I hope yours was a happy and fulfilling life because I always thought of you as an ethical person. Lorna Rae Shrum Daley Moore

When Peter Breck died, I tried through a forum, as tactfully and sensitively as I could, to find out if Mr. Breck knew Jesus. Mr. Briles not only answered my inquiry, but he also told me about himself and his faith in the Lord. Such a nice, nice man. I had met Linda Evans at a book signing the year before, and she also told everyone there how much she had liked Mr. Briles and how sweet he was. I'm so happy I kept his email to me.

I'M 72 YEARS OLD AND I GREW UP WATCHING THE BIG VALLEY AND DANIEL BOONE WITH MY DAD AND MOM IN THE 60'S. IT'S SO SAD THAT 3 OF THE SONS HAVE PASSED AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE. I HAVE A PACEMAKER BECAUSE HEART DESEASE RUNS ON MY DADS SIDE OF THE FAMILY. MY DAD DIED AT 81 OF A HEART ATTACK IN 1998 AND MY MOM WAS 78 WHEN HE DIED OF COPD IN 2000. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY GOES OUT TO THE REMAINING ACTORS AND ACTRESSES OF THE SHOW AND TO THEIR FAMILIES.

Charles Briles made a difference in my life. He made it better and enriched it in so many ways. He helped instill a strong set of values that have lasted a lifetime. Because of the Big Valley, I am never alone. The Big Valley has been a source of comfort, a place to reaffirm ideals, and a reliable group of friends that are always there to help. Thank you Charles for bringing Eugene to life and creating a positive force that will endure forever.

I have recently become a dedicated Big Valley fan. Finding this gem of a series has added much enjoyment to my life. Mr. Briles character of Eugene was a bright spot to the Barkley family. The character had an air of innocent wonder mixed with a young man growing up in a not so innocent world. I would like to thank Mr. Briles for playing the character so well. God bless his family and may their memories be blessed with the joy of him.

Thanks to Chuck I learned a lot about so many things, He was easy to talk to. When he talked about being at Memphis you could hear the excitement in his voice. He was so nice to answer questions I/we had on his yahoo page. I can remember when he first came out he was on I admit I was not so sure as I had been on an actors site where so many pretended to be him. Chuck was not upset he just said to ask a couple others on site if it was him or not...I kept many of his notes on Yahoo, esp when he explained all things film wise I am so happy to not only to have gotten to know him, but also to be able to call him a friend... I will keep you and the family in good thoughts Blessings

I always looked forward to chuck's visits. I paint outside in my "studio" and chuck used to come up my driveway with his motor bike, sometimes visit for a half hour even an hour and talk about our shared experience in film and TV. His love and enthusiasm for "the business" was contagious. He always left me with a feeling of greater pride in having been in " show business". on occasion he would burst out with-------There's no business like show business. Etc, then I would join in the song. And we would both fake a tap dance routine. Rest in peace my friend. Nicky

I was saddened to learn of Mr. Briles' passing. He was a guest of ours at the 2012 Memphis Film Festival, a nostalgic event that attracts fans of classic movies and television series. We thoroughly enjoyed having him, and his two sons visited him there at the show. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to them and the rest of the family.
