Dale Ridgeway Obituary

Dale Ridgeway Robert Dale Ridgeway, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 16, 2016, with his family at his side. Dale was an eager participant in life. He loved and was loved by many people. A gifted raconteur, many of his stories were true. A favorite pastime was Sunday golf at the Morro Bay Golf Course, where he made a hole-in-one in 2007, and he treasured his membership in the OHAT Golf Club. His enthusiasm for sports ranged widely, and he was a dedicated SF Giants fan who traveled with friends every season to attend a few home games. Dale was committed to his community, and was a past president of the Lions Club. As parade chair of the La Fiesta celebration in 1971, he helped secure Mickey Mouse as Grand Marshal. Dale was interested in architecture, art museums and history, especially of towns he visited during travels across the U.S. There was a special place in his heart for the island of Kaua'i. He prized his sobriety of 42 years in a 12-step program and helped many people in their recovery. To that end he was a board member for many years at Middlehouse Recovery Home of San Luis Obispo. A U.S. Army veteran, he served proudly during the Korean War. Dale is a 1968 graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He worked many years in public relations in the title insurance industry. Born in Bakersfield, he and his wife of 64 years, Lorraine, moved to San Luis Obispo in 1955. He was a loving and supportive husband and father, and a trusted friend. Dale is survived by Lorraine (Hoffman); two daughters, Leslie Ridgeway and Lindsey Ridgeway; and sons-in-law Terry Wells and David Becker; beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, and valued friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dale Ridgeway, Sr. and Mary Malinda (Hutchason) Ridgeway, and brothers Edgar Ridgeway and Ronald Ridgeway. A Celebration of Life will take place at 6:00pm on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Morro Bay Golf Course clubhouse, 201 State Park Rd., Morro Bay, Calif. Dale requested, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Middlehouse Recovery Home, 2939 Augusta St., San Luis Obispo, Calif., 93401. Sign his guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries

Dale, you will be missed by dozens of men and women in San Luis for your warm smile, your generous and listening nature, and your willingness to always be of service. Many of our close friends have already made the journey to be in the arms of our loving God, and I sure Pete and Lloyd and all our other friends who have departed will be there to welcome you to the great meeting in the sky.

Oh, Dale, are we going to miss you, your cheery greetings, your ready laugh, your easy and many kindnesses. We struck gold in neighbors when we moved next door to you five years ago, you and Lorraine the best kind of people, the dearest of friends. We won't be able to look out our windows or walk past without seeing you puttering around the yard, watering your flowers, chit-chatting about the Giants, petting Winkie. The world--our world--was a far better place for you. And don't you worry--you know us, we'll be looking after Lorraine and pestering her just as much as we did the two of you. We love you and miss you so very much. Always in our hearts and now in God's kingdom, only a temporary goodbye.

I did not know Mr. Ridgeway personally, but did have the honor/pleasure of teaching his two beautiful daughters at Laguna Jr. High. What a tribute to him (and his wife) they are. I know they must have made him VERY proud!!! He will be missed.
