Don Ritenour Obituary

Don Ritenour, 63, of Nipomo passed away peacefully, though unexpectedly, at his home Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008.

Born in January 1944 in Minneapolis, Minn., he grew up in the Twin Cities area until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Vandenburg AFB from '˜64 to '˜66 and then he moved to the San Francisco area for a few years before returning to San Luis Obispo County in '72. He started Don Ritenour Landscape, which he owned until his passing.

Don was always ready for a lively discussion of politics or science. He enjoyed raising four boys and valued his family above anything else. He always thought of the worst-case scenario first, but his actions reflected his inner desire for the most positive outcome. He was an honest, humble man who led by example. He has left a beautiful legacy around Nipomo, which can be seen in the many landscapes he installed. He made the world a better place one plant at a time.

His family and friends will deeply miss his laugh and his wisdom.

Don is survived by his wife, Carla of Nipomo; sons Paul Ritenour of Murrieta, Calif., Jesse Ritenour of San Diego, Calif., Andy and Peter Ritenour of Nipomo; mother, Lucille Rodin; and brothers Ron, Jeff, and Bill Ritenour, all of Minneapolis.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring, at a time to be announced at a later date.

Our hearts go out to your family. Don was such a great guy - the words here reflect just how I will remember him: discussions of string theory, consciousness and the cosmos sprinkled with landscaping tips and yarns. And that laugh - I can hear it now! Don will truly be missed.

Our hearts go out to you at this time and in the days ahead. Your words truly captured the spirit of Don. He will be missed and we will look forward to the celebration of his life in the spring-which is fitting;as a landscaper I am sure it was one of his favorite times of the year.
