Edgar Mattocks Obituary

Edgar Stephen Mattocks, 83, of San Luis Obispo, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012. No words can describe the love, respect and admiration we will all hold for him in our hearts forever. He left this world with pride and dignity and a strength one would not have thought possible. Ed, as he was known to his friends, was born in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Marie "Mickey" Josephine (Goetschy) Mattocks and Edgar Smart Mattocks, and was raised in San Luis Obispo. He later graduated from UCLA. Ed worked many years for the California Department of Corrections, and retired as an administrator at age 53. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 3389 and an avid gunsmith, who enjoyed building beautiful custom rifles. He loved nothing more than to hunt, fish and chop wood, accompanied by his constant companion, dog Mia. Ed made an impression when he entered a room and his absence was even more noticed when he left. Some people are just larger than life''¦ He was a kind, gentle and honorable man who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Ed is survived by his daughters Linda Bollinger and Karla Mattocks of Roseville, Calif.; brother, George S. Mattocks of San Luis Obispo; grandchildren Margot Quick, Craig Carnes Jr., Arista Barragan and Xochitl Barragan; great-grandchildren Mya and Jayden Quick and Ava Carnes. He was preceded in death by his father, Edgar on November 24, 1971; mother, Mickey on May 20, 1982; and son, Douglas Cameron Mattocks on Sept. 9, 1994. At his request, he was cremated and there will be no official service. Ed''s ashes will be spread at his favorite places: Summit Ranch on Cuesta Grade, where he spent many happy hours hiking, hunting and chopping wood; Shell Beach, where he dove for abalone; Eagle Lake, where he loved to camp and fish; the hunting camp in Idaho, where he spent time hunting deer and elk with his ex-son-in-law, Craig Carnes Sr., grandson, Craig Carnes Jr., and numerous hunting buddies; in Puerto Vallarta, where he enjoyed the sun with his daughters and grandchildren, and some laid to rest with his beloved son, Douglas. Until we meet again, we love you. May you ride with the angels and be forever at peace. In his own words "He was a good one!"

I just learned of Ed's passing at the Black Brant BBQ tonight. I lost track of him in the recent years and was hoping to see him tonight. My daughter and I were able to hunt wild turkeys on the Summit Ranch for a couple years. Ed was so kind, gracious, and will surely be missed. I'm sure he was at the BBQ in spirit as another friend and I reminisced the good times. Ed, RIP.

Ed and I shared many good times in high school. He was one of my best friends. George, do you remember the time we were playing a semi-pro team in Atascadero when the QB called a play over your hole and you bellowed out "I can't move the big fat 247 lb. slob"?
Warm regards, Lloyd Newton

My deepest sympathy to Ed's family. My mother, Marge Bowlby and Ed were close for many years and he became part of our family, as well. I have many fond memories of him and was so sorry to hear that he had passed away.

We will always be grateful to Edgar for being a friend to my father. He had a calm spirit about him. We met him on a hike up to Summit Ranch one day. Hearing him talk was like a step back in time. Our sympathy to his family and George, a life long friend of my father. Jerry Lopez and Family

Ed was a special friend of my Grandmother's for a very long time. He always gave us $2 bills at Christmas and was at every family gathering. He was always caring and wonderful to my Gram, visiting her even after she no longer recognized him. Our family shares stories of him (and Mia) often. Our condolences to his loved ones.

Please accept my condolences. I was a classmate of Edgar at San Luis High School. I recall that he was an excellent student and football pllayer. I was impressed with the way he watched over Ed Brown when he was fading rapidly.
