San Luis Obispo, California - Our Mother, Eleanor Marie Garcia, peacefully passed away on July 5, 2023 at the age of 91. Although we are heartbroken to lose someone so special, we cannot help but rejoice in a life truly well lived. Born September 19, 1931 to immigrant Portuguese parents, she spent 89 of her 91 years in Toro Creek Canyon. A lifelong farmer and cattle rancher, she was the family historian and passed along many fond memories of her early years milking cows and working the farm with her parents and brother. She attended the one room Fairview School and was often tasked with shooting a rabbit or other game for dinner after school. Eleanor graduated from Coast Union High School and San Luis Junior College (Cuesta College). She started her career in real estate but quickly moved into banking which she truly loved and enjoyed and many co workers and customers became lifelong friends. She married George Garcia in 1956 and soon went from banking to raising a family. With the help of her impeccable book keeping skills, she and George started a sugar beet harvesting business and later a successful construction company. She was blessed to work with her family and her business legacy continues to this day. In her retirement years she loved to travel the world, go gambling, and dote on her grandsons attending every sport she could. She was fiercely proud of and would tell anyone about her faith in God, her Portuguese heritage and her beloved family. Her four grandsons, Beau, Jake, Grant, and Lucas were the light of her life and she was blessed with a great granddaughter Kali and was overjoyed with "Finally getting a girl!". Eleanor was predeceased by her husband George, her parents Jesse and Angelina Bento and her brother Jesse Bento Jr.. She is survived by her son Alec and his wife Joan, Son Michael and his wife Julie, four grandsons, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. There will be a rosary Thursday July 13th at 6pm at Reis Family Mortuary in San Luis Obispo. Services will be held Friday July 14th at 11am at the St. Josephs Catholic Church in Cayucos. Eleanor often said, " Bring me flowers while I am alive" so please donate to your favorite charity instead. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of Bob and Corkys Care Home for their love and care for Mom in her final months, she loved you very much.
