Elisabeth Abrahams Obituary

Elisabeth Galloway Abrahams

January 7, 1932 - June 22, 2025

San Luis Obispo, California - Elisabeth Galloway Abrahams, MA, MFT, LLB of San Luis Obispo passed away at Sierra Vista Hospital on June 22, 2025. At 93, she succumbed to pneumonia, surrounded by a few of the many good friends she cultivated since moving here in the early '90s.

Elisabeth was born in Beckenham, Kent, England as one of the two daughters of Lawrence and Myra Galloway. She and her sister, Margaret, were temporarily re-located to the English countryside as part of Operation Pied Piper during the London Blitz of World War II. Elisabeth earned a teaching degree in England and taught mentally challenged children, as well as dance and yoga. As a young woman, she visited Canada through a connection with a cousin and was impressed. She always had a fondness for Canada and visited there often.

A lifelong lover of dance and a fiercely devoted follower of yoga master, BKS Iyengar, Elisabeth received a grant from the American Association of University Women to study dance therapy at UCLA. She moved to California in the early 1970s.

At UCLA, in addition to dance therapy, she also studied the law and later worked as an assistant to one of the directors of the African Studies Department there. In the 1980s, she met and married Dr. Joseph Abrahams, a ground-breaking forensic psychiatrist. They made their home in La Jolla, CA, and later moved to San Luis Obispo to take positions at Atascadero State Hospital -- he as a psychiatrist, she as a dance and movement therapist.

A passionate community organizer, Elisabeth hosted numerous gatherings at her home for members of the local Democratic Party. She was also a co-founder of Save Our Downtown, a group of local citizens dedicated to preserving the history, character, and productive activity in the city's core.

Upon her retirement, Elisabeth took up playwriting. Her first effort, "Against the Tide," is a portrait of Melanie Hahnemann, wife of the famed founder of homeopathy, Dr. Samual Hahnemann. A strong advocate for the practice of homeopathic medicine, Elisabeth not only wrote but starred in this one-woman show, which ran for five nights at The Edinburgh Festival in 2009.

She and her husband, Joe, travelled extensively, visiting countries in Europe, Asia, and South America all organized and chronicled by the ever-adventurous Elisabeth.

Dancer, teacher, community activist, playwright, wife and friend to many, Elisabeth led a full and richly rewarding life. Allan Cooper, a colleague and longtime friend of Elisabeth's, put it best when he said, "Elisabeth was full of fire, elegance, and jaunty humor; she will be sorely missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her."

I met Elizabeth 53 years ago when as a very young man I rented a room in her house for my 1st year of studies at the RAM,Then she left for USA ... She "discovered" me at the Edinburgh Festival c. 40 years later when I played there.
Joy!!!
She had a great sense of humour, was highly intelligent and her belly laugh echoes in my mind when writing these words.
Sadly I was unable to contact her to comfort her when Joe died.... or be there for her afterwards....
I am truly grateful for knowing Lizzy.
RIP darling.
My soul mourns....

I met Elizabeth while taking care of her husband before he passed. Elizabeth loved to go for rides in my car with the top down. Usually we would get yogurt and just watch the sunset at the beach...loved our time together. She will be missed

I had married a Californian and moved to LA in 1976 from England. Bob and I met Elisabeth soon after. She became my friend and anchor as a friendly Brit. She came out to Albuquerque, NM where we had moved, to meet her new Godson, Richard. He was the ring bearer when she and Joe married. We always kept in touch through many changes in our lives. She actually came out by train to Kansas for Richard´s wedding.
We met several times over the years. Elisabeth was a special lady. She had charm and character, and a great sense of humor. We visited lots by phone in recent years. We will miss her dearly.

Elisabeth was a talented yoga teacher to many of us. She was able to thoughtfully adjust poses to each student´s abilities or limitations. Her devotion to Iyengar yoga was passionate. She will be missed!

To my family, Elizabeth will always be remembered for the afternoon that she spent helping our younger daughter Laura celebrate her 9th birthday. It was themed as an English tea party, complete with fine china, curtsies, croquet - and Liz Abrahams as Queen Elizabeth. (Joe was a very capable consort, of course). They were among our favorite couples - wonderful role models and always good for warm and meaningful conversation.

Tom and I met Elisabeth and Joe at a political event in our neighborhood in the mid-2000´s. We were tentative in our support of whatever the issue was, but Elisabeth´s energy changed that right away. Such passion! How fearless she was!

Soon, we became regular guests at the Abrahams home. What a privilege it was to sit at their table, relaxed, laughing till we cried, always learning something new, discussing something deeply, and relishing the latest stories from the local political scene.

What a joy it was to have a proper cup of English tea with just Elisabeth and me. Our shared interest in and support for each other´s writing was invaluable.

And then there was the music! That wonderful piano. And theater! And readings of Elisabeth´s play! Singing and dancing!

I am so very grateful for those times.

May she rest in peace.
