John Hunter Obituary

John Alan Hunter
May 31, 1954 - September 11, 2022
San Luis Obispo, California - It's not often that you get to end on a high note. Most people get to leave this earth at a ripe old age, in bed, surrounded by their loved ones. But for John Hunter, that just wasn't good enough. What end is more fitting than to go out doing what you love? For John that was on his bike, riding on a beautiful Sunday morning.
John was a native Californian, born in Corona. After graduation from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, John moved to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly. It was here that he married the love of his life, Susan, raised their two boys, Russell and James, and began a life long passion and career in construction and woodworking. John left pieces of himself throughout the Central Coast, both in the work that he created and the lives that he touched. John's involvement with the Elks, Caballeros, Clampers, Native Sons of the Golden West, Cal-Shasta and South Nacimiento Road Association cemented lifelong friendships. His 50 years of craftsmanship is on display in homes, businesses, churches, museums and universities from San Diego to San Francisco.
No description of John's life here can pay enough tribute to him. If you knew him, you know the caliber of man he was. If you were his friend, then you were lucky to have called him so. Those of us who were closest to him will miss the time we spent with him, as his absence at the next bike ride, barbecue, trail ride or fishing trip will not go unnoticed.
Even with his passing, John's memory will continue to live on. He would have been proud to leave with the reputation he had achieved.
Service will be held, Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 10:00 am, Old Mission Catholic Cemetery, San Luis Obispo, Ca. Memorial service to be determined at a later date.

I am so sorry to hear of this. John is among the finest individuals I will meet in my lifetime. A pearl of a man. Kind, compassionate, understanding. I saw him regularly for about a year as I was his Rolfer. Always great to see him as he would wheel in on his bike. Pray for ease for his family with his passing.

I have known John over 40 years. One of my earliest memories was with E Clampus Vitus on a boat to Santa Cruz Island to place a plaque commemorating the winery on the island. It was a great trip with camping, hiking, and history. He will be greatly missed. - Dave Holmes XSNGH ECV.

Say it isn´t so... I met John in the early 70´s when my best friend, Bill Cockrill, started dating John´s sister Joyce. One of my first memories of John was him cutting a cast off of his foot/ankle before it was intended to be removed. It itched too much, so there he was sitting in our backyard with a Skilsaw removing his cast. He was Roger Marshall´s second in command, building my and Sara´s custom home in See Canyon back in the early 80´s. I always felt a special connection to John, almost like a younger brother. It´s never easy to lose someone who you consider close, and who is younger than yourself. He will be missed by me, and I´m sure many more. RIP Buddy...

We were fortunate enough to have him do our kitchen cabinets about 15 years ago...I wanted bamboo & it was his first time working with it. As accomplished a craftsman that he was; he was still learning and up to the challenge...bamboo had to 'rest' before working with it. It turned out beautifully & will always remember him. R.I.P.

Prayers & Condolences to Sue, James & Russell.

I'll miss my long time bike riding and ski trip partner. His cabinet work is in my kitchen, flawlessly crafted and installed, a daily reminder of what John was all about.
