Leila Humphrey Obituary

Leila Jane Humphrey, 85, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025 in San Luis Obispo California. Born on September 13, 1939 in Santa Cruz California she lived a full life rooted in family, faith and community. The youngest of four children born to Maude Agnes Shelton and Henry William Grossman, Leila grew up alongside her siblings Henry,William and Vera. When the polio epidemic struck her family, she lost her mother at the young age of five and her brother Henry just a few years later. Leila was lovingly raised by her sister Vera and brother William forming an especially close bond with Vera that lasted throughout their lives. while attending San Jose State, Leila met the love of her life, Robert Humphrey. The two were married and shared 57 wonderful years together until his passing. Together they built a home filled with love, unwavering support and a touch of chaos as they raised their four sons, Jim, John, Jeff and Joe. Motherhood was Leila's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. She never missed an opportunity to be involved in school, sports and 4H projects, a devotion she carried on with her grandchildren. She was a proud grandmother to Nick, Matt, Lauren, Riley, Victoria, Brendan, Brianna, Joseph and Robert, and a cherished great grandmother to four. Her presence whether at birthdays, graduations, games, or family gatherings was a constant reminder of her deep love for her family. Leila loved playing tennis and any excuse for a social gathering with friends. She was also an exceptional baker, known for filling her kitchen with the comforting aroma of cookies and especially her famous holiday caramels, each made and wrapped with love. Faith was an anchor in Leila's life. She was an active member of the Presbyterian church in Santa Cruz, when she and Robert made their way to San Luis Obispo they rarely missed a Sunday service. Her caring spirit made her a beloved part of every community she touched. Leila leaves behind a legacy of unwavering devotion, joyful presence, and unconditional love. Her influence will live on through the generations she nurtured and inspired. A celebration of life will be held on September 26, 2025 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church 981 Marsh St. Leila's family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Cuesta Rosa. May her memory be a comfort and blessing to all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Transitions Mental Health and Central Coast Funds for Children.
