Louise Alflen Obituary

Louise Marie Alflen

December 24, 1929 - June 19, 2024

Paso Robles, California - Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Louise Marie (Fifelski) Alflen, passed away on June 19, 2024, at the age of 94 in Paso Robles, California.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Florence, her husband Edwin, and her great-grandson Mitchell.

She is survived by her five children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren: Amy, Edwin John (and Cassie), Linda (and Don), Melanie (and Jim), and Elizabeth (and Jon); grand children Sarah (and Dave) and Anderson, Jessica (and Jeff); Molly (and Mitch) and Anja; Katie (and Cameron), and Thomas, Graham and Genevieve; James (and Krista), and Caroline and Lincoln; and Phil (and Lindsey), and Lucy and Finn.

Born 12/24/1929, she was a Christmas Eve depression-era baby in (west-side) Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she attended Sacred Heart church and school before the family moved to Moline, Michigan. She graduated Wayland High School in 1947 and married her beloved Eddie in 1948. In addition to raising their five children, they ran the family auto business for 30 years. She sang in both the St. Therese (Wayland MI) and St. Bridget (Mesa AZ) church choirs, and enjoyed being a member of the "Canasta Club". She was a voracious reader, and loved traveling, including Lake Leelanau ("up north" MI), Hawaii, and "out west". After retiring from the business, she and Eddie were avid RV campers for many years. When Eddie passed in 2001, she went back to college with a passion. She earned her Bachelors' in History in 2007 and her Masters' (Summa Cum Laude, in History) in 2011 at Arizona State University.

In 2019 she moved from Arizona to California to live with daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Jon. She missed the cultural life of metropolitan Phoenix but came to enjoy the slower pace of small-town California (although she still said it was "too cold").

One of her much-loved professors wrote, upon learning of her passing:

"Louise was indeed a good friend over many years. But she was also something of a wonder in terms of her growth and development. She was intellectually curious to the end, philosophically shrewd, and always on the quest, irrespective of her advanced age. When will we meet someone like that again? "

Louise was a woman who was always young at heart, I remember many parties at the east ranch where we danced the night away. She truly knew how to light up a room with fun and laughter.

Louise was truly inspirational. Her intellectual curiosity was remarkable. I met her ( wine tasting at Pomar Junction) after she had completed her Master´s degree.

Hoping your family´s shared memories are comforting.

I met Louise on one of her trips to visit Liz and Jon. We spent quality time together after she moved to California. I loved listening to her stories about her lifetime of adventures. Louise was a remarkable woman. I never left her presence without hearing funny or thoughtful stories about anything from obscure history to RV trips with her Eddie. I will never forget Louise and will miss her.

Louise was my mother´s friend in high school and introduced Marilynn C to her uncle who was fresh home from the Navy. 1946.
The rest was history. Remember Louise and the other Chatter Club ladies playing Canasta. They were a great group

My sincerest condolences to Louise's family. She was my first cousin on the Fifelski side, and I can remember visiting their farm home in Moline when I was a youngster. What a voracious learner she was, an example for all of us as we get older. Janet Fifelski Sage
