Mary Marquardt Obituary

Mary Martin Marquardt passed away in her Avila Beach home on Sunday, May 20, 2018. Born in Los Angeles, Mary was the daughter of well known architect Albert C. Martin and Dorothy Dolde Martin. She attended St. Paul High School and Marymount in Los Angeles before moving on to graduate from USC. Mary and first husband Jack Seitz moved to Palo Alto in 1976. It was here she co-owned The Cotton Works, a home interiors and fabric store. In 1988 she and second husband Bill Marquardt relocated to San Luis Obispo, where they opened the well known furniture and interior design showroom, San Luis Traditions. Mary was a well respected member of the downtown San Luis Obispo business district, breaking barriers as a long standing female business owner. In addition, she was an active member of the Avila community, serving on the boards of Heron Crest's HOA and the Avila Beach Civic Association. She is survived by son, Eric Seitz; and daughters: Carey Seitz Diment and Allegra Marquardt; brothers: Dave and Charlie Martin; and sister, Claire Martin; plus four grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends, especially at dinner parties. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, Avila Beach Civic Association, or the Wildling Museum. Per her request no services will be held, but please toast her memory, from wherever you are on June 20, at 6:00 pm PDT.

I will always remember Mary as a special friend at St. Mary of the Woods College, and beyond. We stayed in touch over the years. She was friendly and outgoing, intelligent and independent. Later, we visited in Cleveland, Palo Alto, and San Luis Obispo. Although I was from Michigan, years later my son also graduated from USC.
Mary was very social, loved her family and California. She was a natural leader in her class, and later in her business. She will always be remembered.

I was shocked and saddened to read of Mary's passing. She was my roommate at St. Mary of the Woods College. We stayed in touch following that year. Mary in California, and I was in Michigan. Visited her years later in Palo Alto, and in San Luis Obispo. Mary was a very friendly, positive and uplifting person. Many joyful memories!

Mary was always an inspiration to me. She showed me the power of a positive outlook on life that can be maintained through the most trying of circumstances. I admired her so much, and I am very sad to hear of her passing. Sending deep condolences to her family.

Mary was a woman of great style, humor and had a belief in community service. She and I were cousins as she is part of the huge Borchard/Maulhardt families, early California farmers and ranchers from Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Mary loved her family, travel, friends, entertaining, her work, art, and Avila Beach. We will remember her with both joyful memories and sadness at her passing on June 20 at 6PM as she requested.

Mary I will miss you!! You were my guidance counselor for painting lessons in addition to being a great person.
I really appreciated your help with the Avila Civic Association, we had some fun!! You will be toasted on June 20th, and thought of frequently, but especially whenever I'm in a painting class or the fig harvest comes in!! Love you!
Rest in peace my friend, until we meet again.
