Melvin Fowler Obituary

Melvin Paul Fowler, 87, of Arroyo Grande passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, after a short bout with cancer.

Melvin was born in July 1920 in Hinton, Okla., and at the age of 16 moved to California with his family.

Melvin was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Melvin held a 62 year life membership in the Elks Lodge and enjoyed working each year with the Special Olympics. While in his youth Melvin worked at a Buick garage and continued his love for cars throughout his life with classic cars, dune buggies and his most recent sports car.

Melvin and Bobbie moved their family to San Luis Obispo County in 1959 where they established residence in the Historic Coffee Rice House.

Melvin and Bobbie built several mobile home parks in the South County as well as small development projects. He was always there to lend a helping hand or giving a dollar to anyone who needed it. Melvin attributed his success to being faithful to the Lord and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

Melvin is survived by his daughters Judy Mora of Atascadero and Terry Fowler-Payne of Arroyo Grande; son, Phillip Fowler of Fairfield, Calif.; grandchildren Stacy Bromley, Cherise and Heidi Goodgine, Danielle Holmes, Amy Beeman and Steve Mora; great-grandchildren Chad and Cody Tolley, Courtney Goodgine, Kyle Brown, Audrey and Grace Mora and Christian and Sidney Beeman; sisters Velma Trammell of Camdenton, Mo. and Mary Helen DeVito of Ojai, Calif.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Jan. 29, 2008, at Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel in Grover Beach.

A military memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at The New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach, with a lunch reception to follow.

A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Arroyo Grande Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with his beloved wife of 63 years, Bobbie, who preceded him in death in 2003.

The Fowler Family: Please know that we are thinking about you all at this very difficult time. We will always remember Mel as being such a good friend and faithful follower of Christ. His emotions always showed through when talking about a difficult time in his life, but he was quick to show his strength when it was needed. Dear Terry and family,
We are so sorry to hear of Mel's passing. We had some great times with Mel and Bobbi at the Elk's lodge in years past. May all of you find stength from his words of faith and comfort knowing your friends are praying for you. No one can forget Mel's concern for others. Much Love and Many Prayers.

Dear Stacy and family,
Your grandpa was a very special, precious man and he will be greatly missed. It was always fun sitting next to him at the Cal Poly basketball games. I loved it when he'd pop in at our Bible Studies and share his words of faith and wisdom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. Love, Denise
