Michael Emmons Obituary

Michael Emmons Long-time resident of the Central Coast, Michael Lindsay Emmons died peacefully at home on September 29, 2016. In 1938, he was born in Chrisman, Illinois, where he graduated from Chrisman High School, then enlisted in the United States Navy. After graduating from Illinois State University with a B.S. and M.S., he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming. In 1968, he accepted a position at California Polytechnic State University as a counselor and graduate-level professor. A well- known psychologist, professor, and author, Michael was fueled by, as he said, "a driving need to help and serve," thus maintaining a private holistic-oriented practice, while also counseling at the California Men's Colony, and giving lectures and workshops locally and throughout the United States. An avid writer, he co-authored many books, gratified to assist people that he couldn't reach any other way. "Your Perfect Right: A Guide to Assertive Living;" "Accepting Each Other: Individuality and Intimacy in Your Loving Relationship;" and "The Inner Source: A Guide to Meditative Therapy" reflect his twin passionsequal loving relationships and spiritual connection. Meditation and spiritual contemplation permeated Michael's days, allowing him to be present in the moment. His favorite T- shirt proclaims "Be Here Now," as he was while immersed in nature through his love of backpacking, hiking, and trail riding. Michael is survived by his wife, Janet Emmons; son Brent (Shawnie) and grandchildren Denali, Muir, Lyric and Jade; son Scott (Terri) and grandchildren Charlie and Claire; daughter Heather Gimlin (Brett) and granddaughter, Avery; daughter Jennifer Remington; brother, Jeff Emmons; and sister Sandra Hayes (John). Much loved, he will "Be Here Now" in the hearts of those who knew him. Services will be held at 4:00pm, Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, 1701 Fredericks Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sweet Springs Nature Preserve or Central Coast Hospice. I had the privilege of knowing Michael for the past six years, during which I lived next door to Michael and Janet in their guesthouse. He was a lovely man who always had a smile for me. His kind, peaceful spirit enriched my life, and I will miss him very much.

I was indeed fortunate to have known Michael when I first started working at Sierra Vista ER in the late 70's and early 80's. He volunteered to come to help patients who were in crisis or suicidal when few others did. He was always a gentleman even in his last years. I send my sincere condolences to his wonderful family who was his greatest support. Michael, you will be missed.

The most profound spiritual experience I ever experienced was many years ago in therapy with Mike via his Inner Source dialogue technique. I will forever be grateful for that moment of awakening...and for Mike for opening that door. He was a gentle and dear soul, and will be missed by many.
