Nancy Alford Obituary

Nancy Lee Alford Nancy Alford passed away at her home in Gilroy, California on December 28, 2016. Nancy was born October 8, 1952, to Bob and Virginia Alford in Oakland, California. She was raised in San Jose where she graduated from Piedmont Hills High School. Nancy graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a double major in sociology and anthropology in 1974. Upon graduation she embarked with a backpack, an American Express Card, and a Eurorail pass on a yearlong trek through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of travel which took her on many trips all over the world. Her other passion was all things Disney, especially Mickey Mouse. Disneylands both here and abroad were favorite destinations. Nancy was employed by the city of San Jose in the Clerk's Office where she held increasingly responsible positions, retiring as Assistant City Clerk in 2007, after 30 years of service. Nancy married Denny Mahdik in 2006, and they made their home in San Jose. In retirement Nancy and Denny moved to Gilroy where Nancy volunteered at the Gilroy Museum, enjoyed theater in San Jose, and had time to play with her beloved cats. Nancy and her family have deep ties to San Luis Obispo, spending many holidays with her beloved grandparents Marguerite and Joe Turri. She continued to visit often when her parents moved back to San Luis in 1989. Nancy is survived by her husband, Denny; her mother, Virginia Alford; her sister, Judy Alford; her brother, David Alford; her sister-in-law, Nicolette Alford; and her nieces, Amanda (Chase Marsalisi), Samantha, and Sarah; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Bob Alford. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00am, Saturday, January 7, 2017, at Nativity of Our Lady Church, 221 Daly Avenue in San Luis Obispo. The family suggests donations to a cat rescue facility near you. Sign her guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries

I just read of Nancy's passing in the newsletter for San Jose retirees. I'm very sad. One of my first jobs with the City of San Jose Budget Office was working on the City Clerk's budget. Nancy was a true professional, and a good friend. Our paths crossed many times through the years. Rest in peace,my FRIEND!

Nancy came into my life in 1970 where we became dorm mates at UCSB. Throughout the years, she continued to add laughter, adventure, and love of Disney to my life. I will miss her joyful spirit.

Nancy was one the 8 original "Yosemite Stumps", roommates who became lifelong friends after our 4 years together at UCSB (1970-74). We loved her then and we love her still, she will be fondly remembered by us all.

The Alford's and Harbor's had some great times living up on Vista del Valle. I'm sorry to hear of Nancy's loss. She will be missed.

I will dedicate some of my volunteer time at the San Jose Animal Care Center to Nancy's memory.

My memories of high school and UCSB are intertwined with happy memories of Nancy. She was a huge part of my life then, and we remained friends. She was delightful, funny, so very smart, a joy to be around. Her family has my sincere condolences and prayers for peace in this difficult time. This is such a sad loss to many, none more than her family, but I believe God will bind up the brokenhearted to comfort all that mourn.

Nancy was a loved member of the John Stewart fan club, or 'Bloodliners' as we call ourselves. She was always a lot of fun at our get togethers, and she left us with many fond memories. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and her spirit will live on. To quote Nancy, Woo Hoo!

I want to express my deepest sympathy for the family. I worked for the City Clerk's Office alongside Nancy for many of her 30 years with the Clerk's Office. She was my greatest support as my manager (and even hired me) but was also a good friend through those wonderful years. The entire office relied on Nancy for her knowledge and fair management style which brought all of us together as friends not just co-workers. We will miss Nancy at our retiree get togethers from this point on but will fondly remember the good times spent with her. Rest in peace, Nancy.

Our condolences on Nancy's passing. The Turri name brings back memories from late 1930s and very early 1940s. There was a Turri ranch between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. A year-long running stream ran through the Turri ranch, providing excellent trout fishing for my father, who had met the Turri family through his employment as a sausage maker for Molinari Meat Market on Higuera Street.

My deepest sympathy to the Family of Nancy Alford. She was a wonderful lady with a great sense of humor, great personality, a great person with whom I enjoyed as her co-volunteer at the Gilroy Museum. She will be missed by all.
