Paul Tuttle Obituary

Paul Tuttle Paul Tuttle of Los Osos passed away at his home on September 8, 2014, at the age of 88 from congestive heart failure and complications of diabetes. Since 1985, Paul had been a resident of San Luis Obispo and Los Osos, where he lived with his wife Jessie and close to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Paul was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, the third of four children to Hubert Hale and Vivian Marie Tuttle. Along with his mother and three brothers, he moved to Los Angeles around 1930; Paul's father had planned to join them but passed away in 1931 before he could make the trip west. Paul attended Santa Monica High School before transferring to San Fernando High School, where he played fullback and received All-San Fernando Valley League honors in 1943. It was there that he met Jessie Marguerite Lowden, and they were married in 1946. Paul began his career with the Gulf Oil Corporation in 1945, when he was hired as a roustabout in the oil fields of Los Angeles County. Paul worked for Gulf Oil in California for 32 years, followed by three years in Texas and five years in Africa where he was appointed the Eastern Zone Superintendent of Gulf Oil Nigeria, in charge of Gulf-owned offshore oil rigs in the Niger River Delta. Paul was highly respected by the residents of the Delta, and especially by the Kalabari village of Bukuma in Rivers State, who bestowed upon him the title Chief Attah III of Krigbo, and the Igbo village of Izombe in Iwo State, who named him Nwanne Eze-Udo I, Dinamba of Izonmbe (Brother Eze-Udo I, Beloved of Izombe). In addition, Jessie was given an unprecedented honor when she was named Chief (Mrs.) Jessie Marguerite Tuttle by the Bakuma Community Council of Chiefs. Paul retired in 1985 and immediately moved from Houston, Texas, to San Luis Obispo, and then to Los Osos in 2003. After retirement, Paul served on the Board of Directors of five community service organizations: Chevron Retirees Association as President/ Treasurer/ Publisher of semi-annual newsletters; Friends of Hearst Castle as Treasurer/Publisher of quarterly newsletters; Retired Active Men (SLO Branch) as Secretary/ Director/ Publisher of monthly newsletters; Retired Active Men (State) as Secretary/Treasurer/Presiden; and SLO Investors Club as Secretary/Treasurer. To honor Paul, the RAMs created an annual award called the Paul V. Tuttle Award to honor his exceptional service to the club. The club gives this award annually to an individual RAM who has matched the "Tuttle Standard". He also was a member of RAM Coffee Cabinet and Rotary International, San Luis Obispo. Paul is survived by Jessie, his loving wife of 68 years, and six children: Jim and wife Joyce of Cambria, Steve of Bakersfield, Carol Tuttle-Pilling and husband George Pilling of Visalia, Brian and wife Mary of Bakersfield, Bill and wife Gina of Descanso, Calif., and David and wife Sharon of Arcata, Calif. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Hubert Hale Tuttle and Vivian Marie (Stockdale) Tuttle; his brothers Jack, Hale and Charles Tuttle, and a grandson, Gregory Long. The family would like to thank Central Coast Hospice, especially Natasha, Roger and Sara, for the kind, caring and respectful treatment of our father. Paul will be cremated and his ashes spread in his favorite places. There will be a celebration of his life at Switzer Hall at Morro Shores Mobile Home Park in Los Osos, date yet to be determined. It has been so hard to wrap my mind around the fact that I won't see you this Christmas this year at the Madonna Inn. You were the first person I reached for when I entered the lobby. The hugs you gave were the best as well as your sly sense of humor. You meant so much to so many. I'm so proud to have been your granddaughter. In addition, I'm proud to be a Tuttle and it has been remarkable to see and hear from my family after years of separation. Thank you all for writing about the Chief. It is a comfort and joy to know he meant so much to so many.

What an honor to have known Paul, if only slightly through our treks to McDonalds. What an interesting man and an interesting couple. We always enjoyed seeing you at the "Tuttle Table" and will miss you as we notice the table is now empty of the darling Tuttle couple. There is still room for you Jessie and you're most welcome to sit with the rest of us who congregate there regularly. May the angels rejoice as they receive Paul into Heaven. This is our goal and we're "just walking each other home".

I am one of many men who met Paul at meetings of a group called the Coffee Cabinet, that meets each Thursday morning at the Madonna Inn.

For several years, Paul did a ten minute segment every other meeting called "This Week in History".

He did an excellent job and set the bar high for those who attempted to follow him. His wife Jessie frequently attended the meetings with Paul.

It was a pleasure and an honor to be a small part of Paul's long and productive life.

I am remembering all of the careful planning and attention to detail that were the hallmarks of the Chevron Retirees luncheons at the Madonna Inn. Paul and Jessie worked well together and all of us attendees benefitted. Blessings to you, Jessie.

My Grandfather was a hard working, self-made man that loved his wife and took care of his children. I have always had the upmost respect for him and was proud that he was my Grandfather. I also appreciated his sense of humor, even til the very end he could make me laugh and that especially will be missed. You lived a long, successful life Grandpa now you can rest in peace, you earned it!
