Shirley Ready Obituary

Shirley Ready

June 5, 1929 - July 3, 2025

San Luis Obispo, California - Shirley Ready joined her beloved husband and grandson Jack in Heaven on July 3, 2025. A lifelong resident of San Luis Obispo, Shirley was born on June 5, 1929, to Ella and Albert Pedranti at 1028 Peach Street. Shirley graduated from San Luis Senior High School in 1947 and soon afterward began working in the library at Cal Poly, where she met her future husband, John "Jack" Ready, in the Newman Club. They were married on June 23, 1951, and celebrated more than 51 years of marriage before Jack's death in 2003.

The Ready family grew and welcomed three daughters and one son to the clan; Kay, Sue, Paul and Trisha. Shirley loved helping others, whether it be neighbors, family members, or the many friends of her children. Once all her children made their way to high school, she obtained her real estate agent's license and worked part-time in the family business, Ready Realty, helping many local landlords manage their college rentals. Shirley always kept her family at the forefront of her life. When it was discovered in 2001 that her baby grandson, Jack, had a brain tumor and spent many months at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Shirley devoted her time to helping care for his two sisters and brother, while Jack and his mother Bridget spent their time in Palo Alto over the course of baby Jack's three year battle with cancer.

Following little Jack's death in 2004, Shirley decided to explore other ways to help others. She became a volunteer at French Hospital, where she logged over 4,500 volunteer hours over the next 17 years, and proudly earned the status of volunteer team captain.

Shirley always enjoyed her weekly games of Mexican Train with a fun group of friends every Thursday afternoon at the Elks club. In her later years, Shirley moved to the Villages and made many more friends, while enjoying the independent lifestyle she fiercely maintained.

Shirley is survived by her son Paul and his wife Bridget Ready, her daughter Kay and husband Dick Schisler, daughter Sue and husband Dave Sellers, and daughter Trisha Ready and her partner Frith Maier. Shirley is survived by seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, her brothers Herb and Cal, and two grandsons.

A private celebration of Shirley's life will be held in the not too distant future. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her youngest grandson Jack Ready, donations can be made to Jack's Helping Hand, her favorite charity established in grandson baby Jack's name following his death in 2004.

Rest in peace, Shirley. You are dearly missed, and please keep that heavenly piano busy.

Shirley was such a lovely lady, always gracious, caring, and pleasant, and such fun to be with.
I miss her.
It should be noted that at Mexican Train she was a gentle but fierce competitor, and could flick a domino across the table precisely into place, without messing up the other tiles, the Shirley maneuver that no one else has been able to replicate.
