Steven Slavik Obituary

Steven "Steve" Joseph Slavik was called Home on May 7, 2025 at the age of 70. Steve was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on January 16, 1955, but grew up in Victoria, Texas alongside his three siblings after moving there in early childhood. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Ellis Slavik, and his mother, Gertrude Terese Tremblay Slavik.

Steve attended Victoria High School and enjoyed playing football for the Stingarees before moving to San Marcos, Texas to attend Southwest Texas University. There he spent much of his time dancing with all the pretty girls he met. It was during square dancing where he met the love of his life, Penny Sue Brown Slavik. While attending Southwest Texas Steve worked driving the Southwest Texas buses and was later joined there by his future wife, Penny as well.

After graduating from Southwest Texas, Steve went on to serve as a part of Hays County Sheriff's Department before moving on to the City of Austin Police Department and then to the Austin Police Department, retiring in June of 2016.

Following his time in the police force, Steve returned to driving buses for the now-named Texas State University and was proud to be one of the drivers allowed to drive one of the 60 ft long articulated buses.

Steve and Penny married in 1982 and spent 43 years together while raising four children and helping raise a granddaughter. Steve and Penny regularly attended the First United Methodist Church of San Marcos and Steve often found himself involved in the many church projects that his wife signed them up for.

In his free time Steve liked to spend time enjoying a good book, playing Clash of Clans on his phone, or enjoying the fresh air by sitting out in the front yard or going on a walk around the block. He also loved it when he found the time to get away and go shooting at a range or play cards with his family.

Steve was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and uncle and will be greatly missed by those still here on Earth until we meet him again in Glory.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to either the First United Methodist Church of San Marcos or the American Cancer Society.

The viewing will be held at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos on Sunday, May 18th from 4pm to 7pm and the funeral will be held on Monday, May 19th at the First United Methodist Church of San Marcos at 2pm with graveside following at San Marcos City Cemetery.

I met Steve while driving shuttle buses for Southwest Texas State. I think he trained me. He was very patient. Lol

Memories of our days as "bus folks 44+ years ago still make me smile. AJ and I enjoyed being friends with Steve and Penny before and after we married. Sharing happy times together like the wedding in Kerrville and chance encounters at the high school and around town always felt great. Steve´s gigantic smile lifted us.
May the Lord´s Peace be with Steve´s spirit, and with Penny and family.

So, so sorry. Lots of memories coming to mind. Bus, square dance, parties, just enjoying his company.

Hey dad, it's Nate, your youngest, but you knew that already. After all, you chose me, you adopted me, you gave me chance after chance, and never gave up on me regardless of what happened. I am forever grateful for the 24 years I had with you, and I'll miss you. See you on the other side one day. Love you pop.

Steve was one of my first training officers back in the mid-nineties. Because of Steve's compassion for others, calm demeanor and knowledge of a great many things, he was the perfect person to train new officers.
I can hardly think of any friend that was more happy to become a father. Years after Tania (sic), became his daughter, Steve would beam when updating me about her and the rest of his wonderful family.
Thank you Steve for being a part of my professional and personal life.
Rest in Peace Brother.
