A Resident of Aptos
Our Dad passed away Tuesday morning, April 30th at his Aptos, California home with three of his sons at his side. He was born May 8, 1929 in Merced Falls, California to Angelita Cardenas Navarro Torres and Augustine Torres, Mexican immigrants who came to California in the mid 1920's. Tony's widowed mother had come to Merced with her mother and three children to marry Tony's father Together they had eight children.
Tony grew up in Merced Falls and Merced during the Depression and graduated from Merced Union High School in 1947. In 1948 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years on the U.S.S. Sullivans, a ship he was very proud of. In 1956 he graduated from Modesto Junior College, where he met his college sweetheart, LeeAnn Cunliffe. They were married in August, 1956.
In 1966 Tony and LeeAnn moved with their four boys to Santa Cruz, where Tony worked for the County of Santa Cruz Personnel Department for 5 years and later for Cabrillo College Human Resources for 23 years. In the 1970's he coached Little League and Pony League for the City of Santa Cruz, while enjoying his love of fishing. Tony was an avid bird watcher, loved baseball and the SF Giants, and enjoyed watching old, classic movies. Tony and his family enjoyed and looked forward to the yearly Torres Family Picnic. Tony's love of family and friends endured all his life.
In 1985 LeeAnn passed away. Tony is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ralph and Auggie Navarro, sister, Anita Navarro Saxon, and brothers, Alfonso, Dickie and Danny. He is survived by his 4 sons, Eddie of Merced, Matthew, San Francisco, Anthony (Denise), Santa Cruz and Andrew (Carla) of Oakland, his brothers, Alfred, Gilbert, and Bobby Torres of Merced, his sister Lupe Stewart of Fresno, his grandchildren, Sydnee, Kennadee and Joshua, his numerous loving nieces and nephews and his two special granddoggies, Nina and Baxter.
With heartfelt gratitude our family would like to thank Hospice of Santa Cruz for their kind and loving support for our father in his last few months. A private family memorial is planned for the future. Contributions preferred to Hospice of Santa Cruz, The American Heart Association of the American Diabetes Association. Hi God Father, Uncle Tony. I was thinking of you over the weekend. Randy and I stayed at a friends house and in one of the rooms was a hat just like the one you left at my house. The one that you took back from Randy when we said Good bye to you at Merced Falls. Remember the wind blew and you allowed him enough time to get off his tribal headband that he had put around it. As he was reaching for your hat it blew just perfectly so that the headband fell off onto Randy's hand and your hat went into the River. Anyway, saw a hat that was just like yours and we talked about you and all the joy you gave to me and many others. Ok, gotta go now. I love you, your God Daughter Lizze

You crossed my mind the other day as I was registering for a class at Cabrillo. Of course, it has been so many years since we last saw each other. Happy Birthday to you Dad ! There have been so many good times in my life because of you. So many fishing trips - hikes in Merced Falls teaching me all the things that you did as a boy growing up in a Huge wonderland of freedom. A place that was safe , beautiful and loving with your brothers and sisters and cousins- where you could explore and see nature all around you. You gave me those experiences through teachings while hiking with you and my brothers in the rolling hills of Merced Falls California, I tresure those hot summer days with you. My love for you can only keep growing- because of ALL the memories that i will keep rememoring, day after day. I feel blessed that I was with you till the very last breath and I hope n pray that I did the right things for you in life- I love you Dad ! and you'll always be my Angel and will always be in my Heart Forever ! Ah, Tony...I will miss our wee trips to Phil's at Moss Landing where we frequently enjoyed a fine bowl of chowder with a couple of dozen oysters thrown in for good measure. Those were certainly the days, old friend!

Happy Birthday Uncle Tony/Godfather. I am so lucky to have Uncle Tony in my life for all of my life. He shared many stories with his Goddaughter, much wisdom and tons of Love. He always opened his home and heart to me and my friends. I will always remember our walks on the beach, fishing, and many evenings just sitting in front of the fire talking about life. I love you and know that you are in a better place having your own Family Picnic up there with our family.
