Briana Camille Clarke, beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on July 30, 2009 after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer. She was 18 years old. Briana was born on June 10, 1991 to Brian Clarke and Jennifer Ostrowski. She lived all of her life in Santa Cruz.
In the fabric of that life, Briana's friends were a continuous thread that ran throughout. She had a bubbly warmth and vivacity that attracted people to her. Briana's devoted lifelong friends have always been treasured more like family to her.
In May of 2007, Briana received the diagnosis of osteosarcoma, bone cancer in her left leg. Briana never wanted to let her illness define her, not wanting to be "the cancer girl". While she endured multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation treatments and hospital stays, she continued to pursue her academic endeavors. The courage, grace, and beauty that Briana possessed, as well as her refusal to put up with any nonsense, came into sharper focus during this time in her life.
Within days of celebrating her 18th birthday, she graduated from Santa Cruz High School class of 2009. Along with her beloved boyfriend Alex Lombardi, she was preparing to attend UC Santa Cruz in the fall.
Briana is survived by her parents Brian Clarke and Jennifer Ostrowski; her sister Ivy Clarke; and her beloved puppy Lily-Belle. She is also survived by extended family in California, as well as across the country.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Briana today, August 4, 2009 at the Santa Cruz Bible Church in the Old Chapel, 440 Frederick St. at the intersection of Broadway and Frederick in Santa Cruz. Friends and family are invited to a viewing that will take place from 5:00 to 6:00 PM with a service to follow from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Please wear something pink to the service. Arrangements are being handled by Benito and Azzaro.
