Carl Hewitt Obituary

Carl E. Hewitt passed away in his home on December 7, 2022 at the age of 77, attended by his partner. Carl was at MIT for 37 years, first as an undergraduate, then graduate student, assistant professor, tenured professor, and emeritus. He was one of the most important pioneers of Artificial Intelligence, and parallel and distributed systems. He foresaw computation as predominantly communication, as early as 1971 when most of the world was seeing it as top-down number crunching. He made ground breaking contributions to computer science and the high tech field through his lifelong work on Planner, the Actor Model, Inconsistency Robustness, and Security and Privacy. Carl lived in Santa Cruz County for 19 years and many people in the community were deeply touched by him. He is survived by his partner of 39 years, Fanya S. Montalvo, and his younger brother, Blake Hewitt.A memorial will be held at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz CA, on January 14, 2023 at 4pm PT, followed by a zoom reception at 5:30pm PT, ID: 1601151983. Donations to defray the expense of Carl's passing can be sent to Fanya S. Montalvo, at P.O. Box 880, Aptos CA 95001.

Is this the Carl Hewitt who went to high school in El Paso? If so, his family and mine were friendly and I was his math tutor when he was out of school with an illness. I admired his intelligence and calmness (and enthusiasm for math). We were friendly, but lost contact after graduation.

My sympathy on his loss.

Carl, ever irascible, Socratic, inspirational, provocative, gone too soon. Let us finish his work.

Learned of this just yesterday. I will be forever grateful to Carl for his support and supervision of my dissertation. A few years ago, a colleague who met Carl for the first time at some conference ended his brief account of that meeting by saying "Smart cookie." Yes, and a nice guy.

Carl was my Master's thesis advisor at the MIT AI Lab, where I did basic research into the architecture of actor systems. While Carl and I had our differences about theoretical and practical matters, he and I always had thought-provoking and frequently mind-expanding conversations, and I owe him huge credit for setting me on the rest of my journey, as much as anyone.

We called him "The Duck Man" for one of his favorite sayings, "If it quacks like a duck, and waddles like a duck, then you can't say it isn't a duck."

RIP, Carl.

We were born the same year, as I see - 1944. Was a totally different world back then.
May he Rest In Peace.

Carl was a wonderful man: warm, funny and bright. I knew him during the last ten years of his life from a monthly meeting we both attended. He was also humble. I knew him for years before realizing he was a pioneer in AI, a field I only recently began exploring. He will be missed in our community. Rest in peace.

I had the pleasure to study with Carl in the 1970s when he was still at MIT. He was both an amazing mind and a very nice guy. My condolences to his family, loved ones and friends at this time.
