Charles Caldwell Obituary

Charles Caldwell
March 20, 1932 - April 23, 2018
Scotts Valley
Chuck was born and raised in Santa Clara County. He attended schools in San Jose and enlisted in the Army after high school graduation. After completing his basic training at Fort Ord, he proudly served as a Corporal in the Korean War. After his discharge, he attended San Jose State University on the GI bill, graduating in 1957 and beginning a career in education. He served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, and assistant superintendent, earning his EdD from Colorado State University along the course of his career.
Chuck's retirement coincided with the birth of his grandsons, and he spend his golden years as an active and devoted grandfather. He often joined them on Saturday mornings at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and attending their performances and assemblies. He also supported their their education by through teaching them hands-on skills like how to paint or work with tile, how to drive, and how to play golf.
Chuck loved golf. He was a frequent and enthusiastic player, visiting courses in Palm Desert or Silverado each year even as his friends enjoyed pointing out that his devotion to the game didn't do much to improve his handicap. His grandsons have happy memories of playing Valley Gardens in Scotts Valley with him, and his son likes to imagine he's somewhere in the clouds now hitting balls with Arnold Palmer.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Isabelle Caldwell, and his brother David. He is survived by his wife Wilma, his son Keith and daughter-in-law Maggie Daniel, his grandsons Max and Sam, his daughter Karen, and her husband David Pigg.
In lieu of services, the family is establishing a Charles F. Caldwell scholarship fund at Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA in his memory.

I worked Chuck when he was both a principal and director in the Oak Grove School District. He was a good mentor in my early days as a principal. I have fond memories of him and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
