Clay Butler Obituary

Clay David Butler was born in Peoria, Illinois on June 23rd 1966 to Carole Butler (Gatesh) and David Butler. His brother, Kevin was born in 1969 and his sister, Lisa was born in 1970. His family moved to Arizona where he was for the majority of his early life and graduated from Dobson High School (Mesa) in 1984. During his youth he spent many hours fishing with his brother Kevin and friend Rick McMurray, in the lake behind their houses at Dobson Ranch. He lived in Tacoma, Washington for middle school and California (El Centro, Santa Rosa) during his late teen's and young adulthood. In Santa Rosa he befriended John Crowhurst and they started their band, Abnormal Growth. In 1988 he moved to Seaside, CA with his family. His last move was to Santa Cruz, with his life partner Rosalee Schelstraete in 1994. Clay and Rosalee met in Santa Rosa in 1987 and in 2003 they had their daughter, Jennifer. They celebrated their 35th anniversary on June 5th 2023. Clay was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma, a rare aggressive eye cancer in January 2022. It metastasized to his liver in September. He died on June 13th 2023 at home with the support of hospice, 17 ½ months after the original diagnosis. He was extremely proactive during his cancer journey and mentored others who were diagnosed with OM. He was generous with his time, knowledge and resources throughout his life. He was a sharer in the truest sense. Early on in his life he began drawing. Graphic design became his profession and continued in different forms throughout his life. At 12, he got his first camera and photography became a passion. During adulthood he worked at Marzi Sink Factory in Seaside, painting murals on sinks and tiles. Clay illustrated the political comic strip, Sidewalk Bubblegum from 1993-2001. Then in 1998 he got a computer and started doing web design. Clay volunteered at Community Television in Santa Cruz, when it first began and where learned how to do videography. He had several programs there; The Bill and Clay Show, Yadda Yadda and Book TV, along with numerous documentaries which he made with his video partner, Peter McGettigan. Clay began doing packaging design in the 2000's and it encompassed many of his creative skills including writing. In 2001 Clay and Rosalee bought a home in Alimur Mobile Home Park, where he became President of the HOA. He set out to purchase the park from the owner and make it a resident owned. In 2016, his goal was realized. He considered it one of his most important legacies. Clay absolutely loved life. He lived in the moment in a way that was inspiring. He loved learning and being a mentor. He was an artist, performer and creative being. He was the Twilight Ninja, on social media, where he posted local landscape photography of the Santa Cruz coastline, especially Walton Lighthouse. Clay's love of comedy and music were part of his daily life. He loved fitness and health. He loved surfing in the way it should be loved, it was about the wave, being in nature and sharing the experience with others. His favorite spots were the Point and the Hook, which he surfed for decades. Clay cared deeply about politics and ethics, Fairness was a guiding force for him. He had many important friendships throughout his life. If you think of him often, and have shared memories, you are part of one. Clay was predeased by his grandparents; George and Kay Gatesh and Donald and Rozelle Butler. He will be lovingly remembered by Rosalee and Jennifer, his parent's, Dave and Carole, siblings, Kevin and Lisa as well as his nephews, Alex and Saxon Butler and Kyle Butler-Fish, his extended Butler, Gatesh and Schelstraete family members, including countless friends in the surfing, photography, OM and Santa Cruz communities. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 2nd for family and close friends and a Paddle Out will be held where his ashes will be scattered at sea. Please donate to A Cure In Sight, the national Ocular Melanoma nonprofit in his name if you wish to honor his memory.

On June 22nd, 2024 the Clay Butler Memorial Garden was dedicated at Alimur Mobile Home Park in Soquel, Ca. Clay was instrumental in our being able to buy the park from the owner. He dedicated many years and was tireless in his determination to accomplish this goal. in 2015 we succeeded; thanks to Clay and others. He was an amazing man and I can't describe how much I admired and respected him. He will not be forgotten. Gone entirely too soon.

Thank you Clay for sharing your experience. Sadly I discovered your YouTube following my recent enucleation due to ocular melanoma. We both had same diagnosis, the same reason to ditch radiation therapy, and go straight for removal.
Mine was right eye & I'm only just starting my journey with scans to check for metastasis, and your videos allowed me to understand what I have been experiencing since my op and for once not feel alone.
You covered everything that I am relating to.

I was hoping to comment on your videos to say how much your wisdom and insight meant to me.

I'm heartbroken. I never met you, engaged with you, didn't even know you existed until 2 days ago, yet I felt a connection as though you were an old friend.

God bless you,, God bless your family.
Gone far too soon. I will continue to share your videos and hope that they will help others with ocular melanoma diagnosis.

A true warrior.

Clay was a friend of mine and I can't believe he's gone. I was just going through some old videos of the performance space I ran back in the 90's in Santa Cruz and found some video of him which was quite funny. I did a web search with his name to connect with him and I found his obituary. This is truly shocking and I'm super sad to hear he left the planet. Please reach out to me Rosalee so I can send you video if you're interested.

Rest in peace Clay, my fellow OM traveler. You have arrived in the Realm of Light of the Holy One. Your positive Spirit will be missed here.

I was diagnosed with OM in Nov 2021 and had my surgery in Jan 2022 while I believe Clay was diagnosed in Jan 2022. Clay was already an active and valued member when I joined our Tues Zoom group. He had such a positive attitude and reached out to everyone. He was like a warm ray of sunshine mixed with a rainbow spreading hope and lifting spirits and he was so funny and open. It was a bit of a gut punch when he passed so suddenly. But I am so glad I got to meet him even if it was just on Zoom and FaceBook . He has left a lasting impression and left the world a brighter place, even as we are sadden by his departure. Even though Clay is gone, I'm sure there are some of us who will lean on his memory to help us face what lies ahead.

I knew Clay from a Facebook group. He was inspiring to me. One week after having his eye removed there was a picture of him holding his board ready for the waves at daybreak. I found it so amazing that he was back at normal life 1 week after enucleation. I think all of us in the group looked forward to his posts. Truly a life well lived.

While I never had the honor of meeting Clay personally, we share the same wretched disease, and met through a FB OM page. I enjoyed following his journey because he held nothing back, and gave hope to those of us who find ourselves in a similar situation. Through our interactions I know he loved photography and surfing, and was always willing to off sage advice about the treatments he was going through. To his family and friends, I'm truly sorry for your loss, I imagine he was quite a character! Please make it a mission to have a yearly, dilated eye exam, in his honor. I think that would be a great way to honor him. Rest peacefully, Brother. You put up one hell of a fight

I never had the privilege of knowing Clay personally, I met him on the OM website. When I got diagnosed with OM I was so scared, I went online to learn about this nasty cancer and found the OM community. He helped me more than he ever knew, I refer to him as the "warrior" of our group. I ask myself everyday who's gona answer my questions now??? Gone way too soon. Fly easy my friend .

I met Clay by having the same diagnosis thru social media. He was an educator, philosopher and a humanist. We had our surgeries the same day, 2/22/2022. Unfortunately he left us way too soon. Every time I see something on our OM groups, I think, what would Clay say? Condolences to his family, he really made an impact in our short friendship. Peace be with him .

What can I say about Clay. He was the most free willed person I've ever knew. Nothing would stop him from being himself. More people only wish to be as free as he was. Clay will be in my memory for the rest of my life. To Clay the only human to never hid for anyone
