Daniel Thomas Fogarty, of Santa Cruz, California, also know as "Bud" by family and friends passed away August 1st, 2009 at home at the age of 91. Born in San Jose, California in 1917 to Thomas and Rose, he served bravely on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga for four years during World War II and was present when the Saratoga opened the Guadalcanal assault and at the Iwo Jima operation. Daniel married Bernice Opal on April 5th 1947, they just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. He built and owned Santa Cruz Rug Cleaners from 1946-1955 The building and business which is still standing on Seabright Ave after 63 years and built and the owned Salinas Rug Cleaners from 1958 to 1965. After retiring in 1965, he spent time traveling, biking, playing with his metal detector and taking walks around Santa Cruz. He loved to stop and chat with folks along the way.
Dan enjoyed telling stories of his days in the Navy and sharing the Fogarty family history of old San Jose and the family ties to the Bernal's and Patron's. Dan was an avid beachgoer and surfer in his young adulthood. One favorite memory are the family car rides we enjoyed on West Cliff drive in Santa Cruz; Dan would always say "there I am" as we passed the Surfer Statue. We will fondly remember Dan every time we see the Surfer Statue. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Helen DiMaggio, Mildred Cox, Eleanor Contratto and his stepson Thomas Lee Sinclair. He is survived by son James Fogarty Lori, daughter Danette Smith, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Dan's life will be held Saturday, August 15th 12pm at Santa Cruz Memorial 1927 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz. A reception will follow at the Santa Cruz Memorial Mariposa Room.
