Douglas Landauer Obituary

Douglas Landauer
Nov. 15, 1952 – Apr. 17, 2015
Ben Lomond
Software engineer and nature lover Douglas Alfred Landauer passed away at 62 in Redwood City, California, after complications following a heart attack.
Born in Pasadena, California, Doug was the third of four sons of Donald Landauer and Dr. Lyndall Baker Landauer. He attended Blair High School in Pasadena, but left early to enroll at UCLA at age 16. He graduated UCLA in 1973 with a B.A. in mathematics and computer science.
Doug was married to Deborah (Doughty) Landauer for 33 years, and they and son Nikolas made their home in Ben Lomond, being attracted to the natural beauty of the area.
Doug pursued his passion for computer programming and systems for over four decades, working at Interactive Systems, Sun Microsystems, Apple, IBM, and Google, and most recently Sumo Logic in Redwood City.
Doug was a man of many interests. He had a special fondness for the Sierra backcountry, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna of the California wilderness. He taught many family members and friends how to safely enjoy the wild on backpacking trips. He was actively involved with the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz. He also loved solving all kinds of puzzles, and was an amateur musician who played many instruments.
Doug was an exceptionally patient, kind and thoughtful husband and father, and was dearly loved by all who knew him. Doug was predeceased by his mother Lyndall Baker Landauer in 2013, his father Donald Landauer in 2006, and his younger brother Michael Landauer in 2003. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Landauer of Ben Lomond; his son Nikolas Landauer and daughter-in-law Sarasvati Landauer of Portland, Oregon; his brothers Christopher Landauer of Thousand Oaks, California, Timothy Landauer of Plano, Texas; his nephews Matthew Landauer, Robert Landauer, Shaughn Landauer, Benjamin Landauer, and Jordan Landauer; his nieces Kellie Landauer, Heather Bray, and Jordan Doughty; his brothers-in-law Mark Bray and Matthew Doughty, his sisters-in-law JorJa Landauer, Mary Spadaro, Dianne Bray, Mary Doughty, Susan Doughty, Maureen Doughty, and Jill Doughty; his aunt Meredith Wylie, and cousins Paige Macias, Stacy Smitter, Tyler Hammond, Hilary Bartle, Lance Bartle, Linnea Lortsher, and Ariel Lortsher Wood.
He will be greatly missed.
Memorial services are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Doug's memory be made to Sequoia Audubon Society, www.sequoia-audubon.org/donate.html

I'm really sorry to read about Doug's passing. I knew him from mountain biking. He was the first person I knew who had a laptop computer and wireless internet, at a time when such things seemed like science fiction. A group of us could be having a discussion, and Doug would have pulled up relevant info even as the discussion was happening. He was smart, funny, and gracious in his dealings with others. I rode with him a few times on group rides, and it was always wonderful, as his appreciation for nature was contagious.

I have know Doug for over 30 years. Keith and I had our first date with Debbie and Doug over 30 years ago--the hospitality was incredible and we went on to be great friends. I loved Doug and found him to be one of the most kind and gentle men I have ever known. I will miss him and know that the heavens have opened to welcome his beautiful soul surrounding him with light and love.
