Fairfax Lomonosoff Memoriam
In Memory of
Fairfax Lomonosoff
Fairfax Lomonosoff passed away peacefully on May 29, 2022 with her daughter Catherine and granddaughter Natalie by her side. She was 94.
She was an exceptional person who lived a full and enjoyable life and will be truly mourned by many, including her son James, daughter-in-law Liesbeth, and grandchildren Marc and Kyra. Dear friends include Karla in San Francisco, Perris in Santa Cruz, Mariana in Miami and Marge in Bellport.
Fairfax had a lifelong passion for volunteering which began during WWII in Chappaqua NY. She spent her life volunteering in various capacities until she decided to retire at the age of 90.
She graduated from Skidmore College in Sociology, and as an accomplished classical pianist, she also minored in music. After college, she worked at her Father's architectural business in NYC where she met Boris Lomonosoff, a mechanical engineer and the love of her life.
They raised their children in Bellport NY, spending summer days sailing and taking the village ferry to Fire Island for clambakes with their close friends. Family time often included camping trips near and far, including a two-month camping trip across the country with visits to numerous National Parks. During her kid's school years, Fairfax obtained a Masters in Library Science after spending years in the roll of volunteer librarian at the Bellport Public Library. She loved working as a Reference Librarian searching for random, often obscure information, before the age of Google. She was active in local politics and participated as President of the League of Women's Voters. Always the concerned Citizen, just a few days before she passed away, she expressed concern that she wanted to make sure her absentee ballot had been sent.
After James and Catherine left for college, Fairfax and Boris moved to Coconut Grove Florida and she worked as a Librarian, however she was not a fan of the evening and weekend hours which were the opposite of Boris's hours, so she decided to change careers and worked for a Title Insurance company as a Title Examiner.
Fairfax moved to Santa Cruz after Boris passed away in 1990 to be near her daughter and granddaughter. She was initially employed at the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, then decided to volunteer there until she was 90. She was Honored with a National Award for bringing the File Of Life program to the tri-county area. She fundraised and made her own private donations to keep it going for about ten years. She worked on the Transportation Desk for about 25 years arranging free rides for medical appointments and the purchasing of groceries. Transportation clients, drivers, staff and other volunteers all especially liked her. She was a no non-sense person, yet very kind. She also volunteered at the Ben Lomond Library for many years, and as a Friend of the Santa Cruz Library bringing books to homebound seniors until she was 90.
She wanted no funeral or memorial, so she will be most honored by any donations to the Volunteer Center or the Santa Cruz Public Library.
