Gary Ray Kendell passed away December 14, 2007, in Denver, Colorado. He lost his fight to pneumonia and meningitis, but lived a full and expressive life as a dancer, teacher, director, producer, and entertainer. Gary was born November 7, 1970, to Franklin and Kisun Kendell and was raised in Seaside, California. In 1990, he took his dancing from the streets into the studio as a Hip Hop teacher at All The Right Moves in Santa Cruz. Later he went on to teach regularly at Motion Pacific and provided workshops at DanceCenter and DanceSynergy.
Gary taught at dance studios and performed at events throughout the United States and around the world. Most recently, in November 2007, Gary taught Hip Hop dance to hundreds of students in the Republic of Estonia. Over the years he was a member/director of numerous professional dance groups including Jughead, MindTricks and Jabbawockeez. The past ten years found Gary spending time producing, directing, and traveling with Monster Shop Bumpin' and BreakShop, dance productions designed for County and State Fairs around the United States. These productions also toured China.
Locally, he founded several dance troupes including the Boom Squad, Boom Boys, City Heat, and the Flava Unit. He participated in dozens of benefit performances and teaching activities in the Santa Cruz community such as various County Parks & Recreation afterschool programs, First Night Santa Cruz, A Gay Evening in May, Moving Mountains benefit for women with Breast Cancer, National Dance Week, AIDS Walk kick-off event, Free Mumia rallies at UCSC, Kwanzaa celebrations, and the Monte Foundation Fireworks show. In 2001, Gary was a recipient of the esteemed Calabash Award Honoring Excellence in the Ethnic Arts, from the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz, due to his vast contributions to the community.
For almost 2 decades Gary served as an ambassador of Hip Hop Culture to the Santa Cruz area. Many boys, girls, men, and women from varied walks of life have been escorted down the path of rhythm with Gary as their interpreter. His warmth, his fun, and his care-free, energetic expression engendered his students with self love and a sense of community. He succeeded in opening the hearts & minds of thousands of students to the beat of Hip Hop music.
Gary leaves behind his mother, Kisun Kendell of Yuma, Arizona, his brothers Ronnie Kendell and David Kendell, and hundreds of friends and students who love him like a brother.
"To the lives you touched, to the rhythms you followed, to the footsteps you left behind, and to the talent that will never be forgotten. Here's to a beautiful life lived. We love you Gee. We will miss you. Dance for us in Heaven."

Gary....I know you are up there thinking of routines in your head and perfecting them! The best part is even the way you practiced was unbeliveable.
I was just lucky enough to be apart of your life and I will miss more than you know.
You will always be remembered and I am just glad that we were able to know each other for so long!

I love you Gee Money, O Gee Wan Kanobi, Gee One....a man of many names but one legacy. We will never be the same but because of you, we know how to keep on dancing.

Have you ever been in a room filled with magic? That was what it was like being around you, Gary and the dancers. As a parent of a dancer, I so enjoyed sitting in the room and being around the electrifying, dynamic energy that you exuded Gary. The spirit was contagious! Your gems of wisdom that you imparted will never be forgotten. At the last workshop my daughter attended in Aptos, I will never forget the words you said,
To the dancers: anyone can learn the exact steps but then it needs to be internalized and felt inside, until it becomes your own.............
what a wonderful, magical and unique person you were Gary.
The gifts you gave and those still to come... to each and every person your life impacted.
You will never be forgotten.
Love,
Jamie

Hi G,
Thank you for being you. I will always remembered the good ol' Shock/Motion Pacific days...and to watch you perform in SF HipHop Fest and other local art shows at Foothill College...just everywhere! Not sure why you always encourage me to spin my head on the cement (G I know it looks cool, but not everyone has a helmet head like you :). You always try to make me laugh and challenge me with your quick and complicated choreos, and I try to remind you to stay hydrated and to eat, because you never remember to feed yourself. Wished we actually got to do those Korean tours, but I'm sure the seeds you have planted over your dancing career have already allowed you to change so many more lives than you could ever imagined. I love you and I miss you-- not just as a dancer, but more as a person. I was one of the slow kids in the bunch, stumbling my way across the realm of hip hop with no formal trainings at all. I was blessed through the Shock connection when you visit our rehearsals from time to time, joining us on the practice floor (and onto a freestyle circle in the parking lot before we all went home). Rehearsing and sharing the same stage with you really made me grow. God knows I have not been continuing my quest in hip hop as much as I used to since I went to college, but words cannot express the excitement when I see you again at the SF Hiphop Dancefest during my visit at home. We were discussing the whole skating deal, but I will try to be inspired and make that happen someday. Hopefully I'll still be able to carry out some G flava in it :).
I love you, I miss you, and although your visit was short, I thank God for the time we were able to spend with you while you're here.
with Love and Blessings,
Jen

Gary, you were truely one of the greatest people to ever come across this planet, and I feel blessed to have been a part of your workshops and classes for so long. You had the brightest smile and the warmest heart. Anyone that came across your path was truely changed for the better. You taught me to appreciate dance more than I ever had before, and I will continue to. Everytime that I step on a stage to perform, I'll do it for you, Gary, because I know how much teaching, chreographing, and performing meant to you. I know that you are looking down on all of us with that big grin, wanting us all to do the best we can and to always dance "boom crack crack"
to the beat of the music...just like you, Gary.

I remember watching Gary dance and remarking to myself he is effortlessly agile. My mind cannot accept that he could be taken so soon. I can see in my mind's eye the way he could spin as if he were just breathing. He had a degree of coordination that set him apart from other people, but he was never anything but humble and engaging. His vitality and physical grace are locked in my memory forever.

When I think of Gary I always smile. He inspired me with not only his amazing dancing, but the smile he had on his face the whole time. His attitude exuded joy. I will miss him, but will have happiness in my heart when I think of him.

Gary, you made a big difference in the world of dancing. You taught your hip hop dance moves to so many dance troops and schools throughout California, other states and countries. Amazing !!!
You had that special gift of making everybody feel special from the advanced dancer to the beginner. I loved your style so much that I took classes from you in San Jose, Santa Cruz, Oakland, Redwood City, and San Francisco. You also made a big impact with young people, such as Future Shock San Jose. I'll never forget the first time you came by to teach them your choreography. At first they struggled with your choreography, but with your patience, gentle guidance, and that brilliant smile of yours, they picked it up in due time. You won their hearts and I know you made a difference in their lives as well as mine. Thank you Gary. I will miss you.
Love you always !!!

Gary was my daughter Anica’s dance teacher at Motion Pacific when she was in junior high and high school. Gary did much more than teach her hip hop steps and choreography. He gave her a way to appreciate and express her true self. The world has lost so much by Gary’s death at such a young age. But I like to think all of us who were touched by him carry a little of Gary’s light inside of us.

I am still in shock at the loss of such an amazing, talented man. Gee has inspired hundreds of dancers and through us, his memory will live on. I would not be the dancer I am today without his encouragement and belief in me. I know each time I get on stage and "kill the bug or boom boom crack" I'll be thinking of Gee and his passion for dance and friendship. Hip Hop will never be the same....

I remember the first hip hop class i took from you in Santa Cruz. From that moment, I was hooked. If it wasn't for you I would never have started dancing again!! There are no words to describe how much your dancing has meant to me. I will NEVER forget you! Love, Kelly

Gary means more to me than words can say. I love him dearly and miss him already. My heart goes out to his mother with much sympathy.
To the rest of you, as Gary would say, "Keep on dancin'."
