Gilda Jenny Stagnaro, one of the most beloved figures in her native Santa Cruz and an icon of the Central California waterfront, died of a coronary-related incident that took place in front of the restaurant bearing her name on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, Friday, January 4. She was 83.
Born the ninth of 11 children to Cottardo II and Batistina Stagnaro both natives of Riva Trigoso, Genoa, Italy, March 31, 1924, Gilda was named after an elder sister who died in infancy. "G.J.," as she was called by family members when young, was raised in the Santa Cruz Italian Fishing Colony, known as the "barranca," on the Westside of Santa Cruz. As a girl she recalled loving to hear the elderly fishermen sing passages from Italian operas.
Gilda attended Bay View Elementary School, Mission Hill Junior High, and Santa Cruz High, where she was an honor student and played catcher on the girl's softball team. She excelled in shorthand and was the recipient of an American Legion Award. She also completed additional courses in bookkeeping and business practices from the Southwestern Publishing Company.
Gilda took her first job two months after graduating from high school, at the age of 17, with the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce and then worked in the office of Dr. A.E. Allegrini before he was called into the service during World War II. She then went to work as a secretary at Mission Hill Junior High until the end of the war, when she went to work for her family's business operations on the wharf, which then included a fishing fleet, fish market, speed boat rides, coffee shop and wholesale fish operation.
She worked all aspects of the business-except for the boats, as she was prone to seasickness-and she, like all of her brothers and father, took pride in being a fine fish filleter. She often put in 16 to 18 hour days, seven days a week. The only day she took off for many years was Christmas.
In 1971, she opened Gilda's Restaurant, on the site of the family's former fish market and coffee shop. She was later joined at Gilda's by her brother and partner, Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro, and his sons, Malio and Dino Stagnaro, in running the restaurant.
Gilda was extremely proficient in foreign languages, speaking fluent Italian and Spanish, and delighted in speaking foreign languages with visitors to the restaurant from around the world. She always said that she didn't need to travel because the world came to her. She was known for remembering customers by their first name. Always a warm smile on her face, she was the consummate hostess.
Gilda never retired. She was devoted to her work and to her family and many friends who visited with her at the restaurant. She continued to work 40-hour weeks until the time of her death.
In recent years, she enjoyed Tuesday night dinners with an assortment of family members at The Lucky Dragon Restaurant in Aptos.
She is survived by her brother Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro; sister Yolanda "Lindy" Stagnaro Dunn; and more than 100 nieces and nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her beloved uncle, Malio J. Stagnaro, and nine siblings: Cottardo III "Babe"; Mary; Estrella; Batista "Dodie"; Malio H. "Stago"; Joe; Gilda I; and Betty.
As she requested, no public memorial services will be held and interment will be private. Friends and family members are invited to remember her by visiting the Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., tomorrow Wednesday, January 9, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc., 2672 Bayshore Parkway, Suite 520, Mountain View, CA 94043.

I was a way at college when my mother got to a stage in her life that she could no longer get down to the wharf on her own. She loved it down there and she loved the clam chowder. Gilda used to stop by on the way to work and bring mom her chowder. What an amazing wonderful friend to everyone that has had the privilege to know her. We are all so luck to have known her and what a blessing it is to still get that same warm greeting when you go down to eat at Gilda’s . The legacy continues, what a great family. God bless you Gilda and all of your family.

I've never met anyone more loving than Gilda. She made everyone feel special. They were going to name me Terry, which is my middle name, & that's what she always called me. One of the perks of growing up here was the blessing of knowing her. The wonderful smiles & hugs she gave are permanently imprinted on my soul. If anyone deserves heaven, it's Gilda!

I moved myself and my young son to Santa Cruz in 1965, went to work at the University and visited the wharf many times where I always felt a part of the Stagnaro family because of Gilda. When her restaurant opened I was a regular there with my son. She always remembered my name and many years after I moved away, every visit to Santa Cruz I would go to Gilda's and she still remembered my name. I cannot imagine her not being there. I was privileged to know her and am deeply grieved at her passing.

We were valley transplants who had the honor of living in Santa Cruz from 1989 to 2003. During that time, Gilda's was our haven for a great bowl of chowder and beautiful view of the bay. Gilda always had a warm smile and we still look forward to going there when we are in town. Gilda, you will be missed.

I learned of your spirit soaring as the squall line of that days storm was passing as well...I thought it would be fitting to name that days storm after you, Gilda for all those stormy days at the wharf when we would just hang out and enjoy nature as GOD painted for us to view...And I must thank you for all the wonderful years of your inspiration. And for teaching me how to remember a new friends name. (although no one can do it like you...) My love to all the family and friends in this great loss...Larry

Gilda reminded me of my own Mom,Betty Ealy.Strong, independent and"never met a stranger."
Gilda was a true icon and a blessing to all of the Santa Cruz community.
What I enjoyed most was how she would see someone she knew eating and slide into the booth or come and greet them with that wonderful smile and happy aura.
She really was "the queen of the Santa Cruz Wharf."
Condolences and blessings to all.
We will all remember her with a smile on our face.

We last saw Gilda in December just before Christmas week. Among other topics, we chatted about the splendid variety of poinsettias she'd set out for the holidays. We didn't know her personally but always looked forward to her warm greeting and sweet smile when we came out to the wharf for breakfast. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed.

Santa Cruz has lost an icon. Gilda will always be forever engraved into the history of Santa Cruz. Gilda's warmth emulated every hungry soul that entered her restaurant and made the dining experience memorable. She would breath life into her stories of the past as she shared family history that intertwined with the fabric of Santa Cruz. She will always be remembered and cherished as the Queen of the Wharf. I'll always remember her smiles and laughter as a sunny summer day in Santa Cruz.

I too have been going to Gilda's as a child, since my family vacationed often in Santa Cruz. Now, as an adult, I feel a great sense of loss, but also thankful I had the gift of Gilda's warmth and welcome. A world such as this needs someone like Gilda in it.

Our last visit to Gilda's was Nov. 21, 2007 -- and Gilda treated us like we were royalty. That day there were three generations of our family present as we gathered in Santa Cruz for Thanksgiving. What a treat it always was to see her. She made us feel so welcome. We will miss her greatly and remember her fondly.

It will take me quite a while before I can return to the restaurant without a meltdown, though knowing Gilda's energy and the memories of her kind spirit will live on and on. Memories go way back, back to my lunch hour at the 12 or so seat lunch counter. The wharf won't be the same without Gilda there. I will miss her smile, caring about my own family, slipping me an After Eight mint on my way out. I will miss her in so many ways. RIP Gilda.

I am so lucky to have grown up a half block away from Gilda and her family. I have fond memories of going to Gilda's home during the holidays when I was little to look at the Christmas decorations that Gilda always gave her sister Estrella credit for. The entire family was always very nice to my family and I. I will miss seeing Gilda on the wharf and talking about old times. What a loss for all of us.

Gilda Stagnaro, with her brother Robert,, greeted us each Tueday morning at 730 AM for our regular breakfast meeting. Since April 2006, my business associates, Joe Nixon, Jim Strickland, Janek Kaliczak, have been afforded Gilda’s special magic that made coming to the restaurant the best place in Santa Cruz. All of us looked forward each Tuesday to seeing Gilda and her always-sparkling personality, graciousness, and warmth. She is truly from the “greatest generation” and I value her telling me the remarkable story of how 83 from local Italian families served our nation during WW II in the Navy, Marines, Army, and Air Corps. There are several old photos in Gilda’s of these patriots. She was at the stern of another ship on the wharf during WW II while her family and friends were fighting for our freedom.
On a personal note, my family, and especially my son from Pacific Grove, always looked forward to having a meal with Gilda, Robert, Dino, and her family on the wharf. We send our deepest sympathy to the entire Stagnaro family.
Nixon, Strickland, Kaliczak, & Reeves honors her life and salutes her service and dedication to her family, and to all of us who have enjoyed her friendship and most of all, seeing her faithfully at her duty station to the end. God bless you Gilda.

With special memories of brunch at Gilda's overlooking the glistening Monterey Bay. With special memories of my mom's stories of teaching & co-working with Gilda at Mission Hill School. Another pillar icon of oldtime Santa Cruz passes to that party in the Hereafter.
My sincere sympathy to the friends & family who will sorely miss Gilda's welcoming smile.
