Penelope (Penny) Tossell Cheney of Aptos, California passed away in Hawaii while on vacation. She will be greatly missed by her husband Jack Cheney. Penny's brother Jack Tossell passed away in 2016. She will be missed by her sister-in-law, Julia Tossell, her step-sister, Diane Wiles, step sister-in-law, Toni Brutshe and her brother-in-laws, Bill Boucher and Charles Grier. Penny will also be missed by her nephews, David Schick, John Schick and Ken Tossell, her nieces, Beth Tossell Pitt, Laura Sanders, Cindy Sosbe, Susan Clements, Pam Blackburn and Diana Shirley. Penny has numerous great nephews and nieces and many very close friends who will miss her dearly. Jack says," Penny never lost a friend".
Penny was born to John Cortland Tossell and Josephine Adams Tossell Brutshe on June 18, 1939. She attended Norwalk Public Schools and graduated in 1957. Penny went on to Kent State, graduating in 1962. Penny received a Master's Degree from San Jose State after moving to California.
Penny taught in Darmstadt, Germany and Okinawa. She also taught at John Muir School in the San Jose Unified School District retiring in 1998. Penny and Jack were married on Valentine's Day in 1987 in Carmel Valley, California. They lived in Los Gatos, California for many years and retired to Seacliff Beach and loved to travel.
Penny was involved in numerous activities. She was a Master Gardner and volunteered at the UCSC Arboretum and Cabrillo College Horticulture Department. She also volunteered as a docent at Seymour Marine Discovery Center and Seacliff Beach State Park. In her spare time, she was in three book clubs, regularly went to water aerobics, and was a member of California Retired Teacher Association.
A celebration of Penny's life will be held at Best Western Seacliff Inn in Aptos on Saturday, February 18th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at to the Cabrillo College Foundation, Seymour Marine Center, Land Trust of Santa Cruz County and the California State Parks Association.

I have known Penny and Jack for many years. She used to teach when I attended John Muir and my Mom used to work with Jack at Zilog. I am so thankful to have known her. She was always very welcoming and pleasant and will truly be missed. Hugs and love Jack.
