Steven Grassi Obituary

Steven Paul Grassi
Aug. 20, 1952-April 22, 2012
Resident of Santa Cruz
Steve was born August 20, 1952 to Olga and Joseph Grassi along with his twin brother Joe. Growing up they were constant companions and best friends. Many a summer day was spent at Castle Beach enjoying the sun and ocean. Steve was a true Santa Cruzan.
Steve had a passion for custom cars and took his grandfather's '49 Chevy and made it a Hot Rod to be proud of. He enjoyed cruising the beach and Pacific Avenue.
Norman Day hired Steve in 1967 to work at his market in Seabright. This began a career in the grocery business that would span 42 years, ended only by heart disease. Steve loved his work and working hard came easy to Steve. He finished his working life with Safeway stores after 34 years of service.
Steve attended Gault School, Branciforte Jr. High, and graduated from Harbor High in 1971.
Steve met the love of his life, Carmen, at work 26 years ago. Carmen surely changed Steve's life and filled him with love and joy. Not long after, his little girl Shauna was born. Steve felt blessed to have this lovely family.
Steve passed away April 22nd at Stanford Hospital after a long battle with heart disease. He was surrounded by family.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Carmen, and his daughter, Shauna; brothers, Joe Grassi (Laura), Mike Grassi (Judy); sisters, Michelle Wynn, Jennifer Young (Gregg); Father-in-law, Myron Nystrom; sister-in-law, Myra Nystrom; cousins, Beverly Mecklenburg, Marvin Mecklenburg (Joanne), Barbara Dohlen (Ross), Clifford King (Gerry), and Rick King (Jessie); niece, Lana Grassi; nephews, David McDaniels (Tapati), and Jamey Grassi. He was preceded in death by his parents Olga and Joseph Grassi; sister, Diane Grassi; aunts, Edith Mecklenburg and Dora King; uncles, Ervin Mecklenburg and Bill King; mother-in-law, Janice Nystrom; cousin, Ervin "Sunny" Mecklenburg; and brother-in-law Dennis Wynn.
A viewing will be held for Steve on Saturday, April 28th from 4pm-8pm. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Sunday, April 29th at 3pm; both will be held at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel. A private burial will follow. I was saddened to learn of the passing of Steven. I always had such respect for the Grassi family. It was wonderful to see such a close and connected family. The love they shared with each other was so nice to see. I am so sorry for your loss. I was a friend of Diane (I miss her and think of her gracious spirit often). I also miss seeing Jennifer. Again, I extend my heartfelt sympathies for the loss of your family member.
