Werner Barasch Obituary

Born in Berlin, Germany in 1919, passed away in Santa Cruz on June 2, 2008 from a heart attack.

Werner is survived by sister, Else Salter of Napa, Ca, nephews, Chris and Alan Ross and niece, Toni Ross.

Werner was a celebrated inventor in chemistry, most noted for his patent of the process whereby surgical gloves, dish gloves etc. are produced. This alone changed an aspect of modern medical surgery around the world.

Werner was an accomplished pianist and played with small groups of musicians throughout his life, only classical. He was an avid photographer, cyclist, hiker and world traveler he spoke five languages. He served as a secretary for the Sierra Club for a quarter of a century.

In his late life he authored a limited autobiography, describing his repeated apprehension and eventual escape for the Nazi regime during WWII. The book "Survivor" can be looked at on Werner's website, "Werner Barasch.com".

There will be a memorial gathering of friends and loved ones at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2008 originating at the west side turnout at the summit on Highway 17.

I remember how Werner would sit down at the piano in our living room during holiday parties and play Schubert.

Listening to him play, it was not hard to imagine a young boy playing the piano in his parlor in Berlin.
