William Carlin Obituary

William Bayard Carlin (Bill) Of Inverness, California and Old Black Point, Niantic, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2014. Born November 7, 1927 in New York City, he was the son of Cora Weir Carlin, youngest daughter of noted American Impressionist painter Julian Alden Weir, and William Edward Carlin, naturalist and sportsman son of General, later Governor of Illinois, William Passmore Carlin. Bill attended the Buckley School in New York City followed by The Brooks School in Andover, Massachusetts. Drafted at age 18 at the end of the Second World War, Bill served as a code breaker in Army Intelligence. He attended the University of California at Berkeley on the G. I. Bill to study with Composer Roger Sessions and completed his master's degree in musical composition at Princeton. He received the prestigious BMI Student Composer Award in 1957. He served as the Director of The Third Street Music School in New York, the oldest community school for the arts in the United States. He was Director of Development for The Nature Conservancy and later World Wildlife Fund before retiring to his summer cottage at Old Black Point to return to writing music. Bill was instrumental in the long process by which his grandfather's farm became The Weir Farm National Historic Site in 1990, preserving the artistic legacy of the Weir family. Other non-profit organizations he has served include: the Boards of Directors of The New York Botanical Garden, The Weir Farm Trust, The Richardson Bay Association, and The Point Reyes National Seashore Association and the Advisory Boards of The Trust for Public Land and The National Maritime Museum. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Elizabeth (Betty Anne); his daughter, Lisa (Thomas Quinn) of Niantic, Connecticut; son, William Bayard Carlin, Jr. of San Francisco, California; granddaughter, Jessica (Daniel Larkin) of Jersey City, New Jersey; and great-grandson, Gavin Larkin.
