CAROL MULLANEY Obituary

CAROL ANN MULLANEY
Carol Ann Miller Mullaney, 83, passed away peacefully in Santa Fe, NM on September 14, 2022.
Carol Ann grew up in the "Hell's Kitchen" neighborhood of New York City with her parents Peter and Ann Miller. In her youth she taught multiply-handicapped blind children, attended St Joseph's College, and completed a Master's degree at Hunter College in special education. In 1963 she married and moved to Los Alamos, NM with her husband Dr. Paul F. Mullaney, a biophysics flow cytometry scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In Los Alamos she was always energetic and involved in many activities including director of AAUW coop nursery school, the Arts Festivals, United Way, the Catholic church among many others. She later moved in 1980 to Oak Ridge, TN, the home of another national laboratory, and taught children with disabilities. After her husband's death, always eager to learn, she completed her Ed.D. at Vanderbilt Peabody University in Nashville, TN. That effort led to her happy return to Los Alamos where she worked in multiple positions as a trainer with the laboratory. In 2003 she married Dr. Stephen Peter Gary, a plasma physics scientist, and they both moved to Santa Fe in 2006. Carol Ann had a very rich life and was an avid supporter and collector of southwestern art and volunteered as a docent at local museums. Her varied other interests included the Santa Fe Garden Club, Santa Fe Chamber Music, Kitchen Angels, book clubs, traveling and entertaining friends at her Sierra del Norte home. She is survived by her son Dr. Brian Mullaney and her daughter Maura Mullaney. Services will be held Wednesday September 28th at 1pm at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in downtown Santa Fe, concluding with a reception in the Cathedral garden.

I met Carolyn shortly after we moved to Los Alamos in 1969. Carolyn was the head of the nursery school that our children attended, which was in the Northern area of Los Alamos. We maintained our friendship through the years. After she moved back to Los Alamos we saw each other often. When she first arrived back in Los Alamos we worked right near each other. It was great seeing her so often. When we moved from Los Alamos to Washington DC we would see her and Peter every time they came to town. When they lived in Santa Fe we would see them whenever we visited. Morris and I both miss her.

Rozetta Handley for Edith Handley

January 7, 2023

My mother, Edith Handley met Carol Ann in March 1982 in Pittsburg PA. They stayed in contact all these years updating each other at Christmas on their lives the previous year until Christmas 2022, she did not receive a Christmas Card and letter as she always had all these years and that is when we realized Carol Ann has passed. I got to know her through my mother's cards and letters every year and she was such as amazing woman and lived a lot of live while she was here on earth and helped a lot of people. She will be missed and never forgotten. Rozetta Handley, Edith Handley's daughter.

I met Carol Ann when she and I hired on at LANL on the same day, 10/31/1988. We crossed paths over our years working at LANL. Carol Ann was an interesting lady.

I met Carol Ann through the AAUW Santa Fe branch. She and I shared an interest in early childhood education and we both loved cats.
She was a great conversationalist and a good listener. I enjoyed knowing Carol Ann.
