CARROLL HAWLEY Obituary

CARROLL DEAN HAWLEY Santa Fe was Carroll's home for many years. He was employed at the Supreme Court Law Library and loved his work and his colleagues. Fond memories for Carroll included teaching English as a Second Language at Santa Fe Community College, attending the Christmas Day Dances at Santo Domingo Pueblo every Christmas, yearly attendance at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque, and reading about historical figures in American history. Carroll was a decorated veteran of the Viet Nam War, and remained friends with many of the men with whom he served in the Army. Carroll was a prolific writer and was tireless when immersed in creative thought and conversation. He is survived by his mother, Verna; father, Pastor Dean Hawley; his wife Rena; his daughter Dylan; two sisters: Pat, her husband David; and Angela of Missouri; and one brother, Pastor Michael Hawley; his wife Maryjane of Louisiana, and loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Christy and Rebecca. ALS (the monster that took him) ravages the bodies of many Viet Nam vets. A Private celebration of Carroll's life will be held. Carroll was a kind, gentle soul who was always willing to assist whenever I needed help at the Supreme Court Library. He had a kindness that was a rare characteristic in some public service jobs. I was always so appreciative of him for this and will always remember him with fondness. I am so sorry for your loss and will pray for Carroll that he will rest in the arms of our Lord for eternity.

When Carroll became a member of our platoon I can remember Bob Rice saying "he looks like a young kid." Of course, the rest of us very young also. I will always remember Carroll as a nice guy and a good soldier.

Dear Rena and family, there are no words that can ease the pain and loss of a true friend and great American like Carroll. As our Platoon leader John Moore shared, we have a special and mutual bond within our group that served together in Vietnam that no one can take away. One of the best times we had back here in the "world" was at Churchill Downs drinking mint Julips with Sam Jenkins, you and my wife Lynn. We talked often and while he is resting in the arms of Our LORD he is now in the best unit we all aspire to be in. May God bless his soul and comfort you and the family. Please know he was and remains loved by me and all his fellow 3/4 Cav Troopers.Carroll was my brother from "another mother". Blessings and love, Manny

Carroll and I served with one another in Viet Nam during some of the most intense battles that A-Troop engaged in during 1968. He was a rock solid soldier and yet still had the ability to be a warm, caring, compassionate and very articulate man. It was an honor to have known and served along side him. The world will be a lesser place without him among us.
Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

A Troop, 3/4 Cav, had some of the most significant people in it that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Carroll was one of these examples of greatness. Whether in war or peace, he was giving above and beyond. Condolences and blessings to a loving family and caring friends.

I'm so glad I got to spend some time with my Brother trooper last August, with John. We had a great time and renewed old friendships. Carroll was a custom made man, in an off the rack world. He was a great leader and was respected by all who served with him. He will be greatly missed.

Carroll was the heart and soul of the Supreme Court Law Library. His courage, grace, and gentleness stand as a testament to the way we should all live.

Carroll was a wonderful man, incredibly smart and well-read, and from the moment we met I loved to argue with him about books and ideas. He also had a deep appreciation for the absurd, and many years ago he and I caught an unrepressible giggling fit at some now-unremembered silliness during a Santa Fe benefit for victims of the Mexico City earthquake. As Rena always said about us after that, basically neither of you can be taken anywhere, and that was true and is true. Rena and Carroll's marriage was a quietly epic love affair full of deep tenderness and devotion. My dear friend, you have entered into the path.

To Rena, family & friends, my sincere condolences on your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. I'm sure you will miss this wonderful man as will any of the members of the A Troop, 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry that had the honor of serving with Carroll in Vietnam. Carroll loved his fellow veterans from the 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry. I want to ensure that you all know how much this man was loved and respected by his comrades. Carroll was a genuine hero who survived some very tough situations with our platoon in combat. I will be forever grateful for the friendship and help Carroll gave me as a new platoon leader. We are all proud of Carroll's service to our Nation, to her citizens, to the Army, and to his fellow soldiers. Rest in peace, Carroll and rest assured that we will hold you fondly in our memories.
