Dan Terrell Obituary

DAN TERRELL

On Saturday, March 6, 2021, Dan Terrell, a loving father, leader, and friend, passed away at the age of 72.
Dan was born February 12, 1949, to JoAnn and Paul Terrell in Stillwell, OK. He was captain of his Putnam City High School football team, a champion wrestler, and an incredible baseball player. Dan moved to Santa Fe in 1971, where he built the largest title company in the state, Territorial Abstract and Title Company, and became a successful real estate developer. He was a member, served on the board, and was President (1980–1981) of the New Mexico Land Title Association. He received the P.C. Templeton Award in 2005 and the Omer F. Tucker Award, Citizen of the Year in 1999 from the same association.
Dan had a passion for life, family, friends, and a good time. He could always be found at Maria's or the Bull Ring discussing the latest politics or watching a football game. He loved playing a round of golf with his buddies and fellow New Mexico Amigos members, or working on his tractor in Chama, NM. He was known for his smile, quick laugh, and hugs. Dan was the best advocate for those he loved.
Dan was preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul and JoAnn Terrell. He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia White and Lara Terrell; grandsons, Colin and Cass White. He was loved by his former spouses Paula Hurst and Patty Terrell and stepdaughter, Hunter Redman. Dan is survived by his three brothers David Terrell, Donald and his wife, Roxanne Terrell, and Richard Terrell. He was the beloved uncle to Jason Hurley, Hailey Terrell, Jared Terrell, Jordan Terrell, and Damon Terrell.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the Bull Ring Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dan Terrell's name to the American Lung Association.

Dan was a friend to the Osborne family...and the center of a fun circle of friends those who worked at Territorial Abstract and Title...that I (Alan Osborne remember well. We all moved to Santa Fe in the 1970's and I met Dan through my older brother Steve. We are fellow native Oklahomans and my memories of Dan are of a friendly handsome face, open mannerisms with a quiet humor and self-deprecatingly modest considering his talents and contributions to our community. I thought he was one of the coolest in that crowd and always welcoming with a smile.
I am sorry and saddened by his passing and want the family to know what an impression he made on me as I was in my twenties when I met him and all those who he gathered around him in that hard-working hard playing high pressure field of endeavor. He was obviously a role model for many others. Blessings to the Terrell family that I had the chance to know him and know his smile. He was kind to me and my brother wrote to me that he was famous in Santa Fe...a legend. Indeed.

Dan gave this newly graduated English teacher a job back in 1978 when she didn't know shinola about the title business. Thank you, Dan, as I was destined for a life centered around real estate. And Thank YOU for letting me put some more arm-twisting on you to expand in Chama! My condolences to you, Richard, my friend and colleague, I know you will miss Dan enormously. Dan was a legend in Santa Fe and statewide. I kew him from my first days in Santa Fe in 1975 when I was at First Northern S&L and Territorial was located in our building. Will miss Dan's laughter and engaging smile. He was the best of the best.
