DEAN HOPPER Obituary

DEAN (DINO) HOPPER
November 28, 1963 - October 5, 2025
Dean (Dino) Hopper of Santa Fe, who dedicated his career in education to the connection between health and academic success, died on October 5, 2025. He was 61.
Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on November 28 (Thanksgiving Day), 1963, to Eldeane and Kaye Hopper, Dean began his career of service in 1989 as a communications teacher at a vo-tech high school and later at Alameda Junior High, both in Santa Fe. Beloved by students and colleagues, Dean was often showered with warm memories and gratitude when he ran into former students.
Insightful, creative, and generous, Dean was a passionate advocate for student health programs that recognize the link between well-being and academic achievement. In keeping with that mission, he left the classroom in 1995 and joined the New Mexico Department of Health as a disease prevention specialist. He later served as a health educator and then as the HIV Education Program Coordinator for the New Mexico Public Education Department.
Dean was eventually promoted to Assistant Director of the School Health Unit and retired as Director of the Safe and Healthy Schools Bureau in March 2020-ending a 30-year career in the same building, with the same bureau. His compassion extended to everyone around him, and he often championed the needs of the most vulnerable while pushing for progressive change.
After retiring, Dean-a zealous reader-let creativity and his love of language guide him. He spent his first year of retirement completing his original novel, Clarity. In addition to his nightly routine of devouring good books, Dean enjoyed traveling and offering support and guidance to friends and neighbors.
It wasn't long, however, before his expertise was once again called upon. He returned to work as a contractor for the Public Education Department, continuing his commitment to the causes he believed in.
Dean is survived by his loving partner of 25 years, Anthony Cadavas; his sister, Terri Gaussoin, and her husband, Kristofer; and his nephew, Thomas Gaussoin. He also leaves behind many other nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who loved him fiercely.
Honoring Dean's wishes, his ashes will be scattered privately by his family. A celebration of his life will be held in Santa Fe at a later date. Those wishing to express condolences or receive more information about the life celebration may contact Terri, Dean's sister, at [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you pick up a good book, light a candle for the dark, and offer an open hand and heart in service to someone nearby.

Dean and I worked together at the Public Health Office, both as Disease Prevention Specialists. We sat across from each other and he felt like family to me. He was always in a great mood and constantly had me laughing. He was a genuinely, great guy and the world won´t be the same without him.

I am so sad!!! When Dean entered a room , he was like a red faced sun that lit up everything and everyone with his warmth, kindness and love. He and Anthony took me everywhere on my visits there. More recently in Sacramento there was so much joy and fun. The Spirit Is still with him now! Miss you Dude!!!

My gosh, I am so shocked. I just saw him - he looked amazing as always and said he was enjoying his retirement. We worked together on mental health issues for many years - Dean from the public school system, and I from the managed care side of the equation. Together, we strived to improve health, education, and prevention for our communities.

Today, I shed tears for you, dear man. Thank you for gracing my life with your kindness, wisdom, and friendship.

Some old memories.... Found a couple of old photos and found John Moore with Dean. Both are gone now and both leave gaping holes in my heart. I was looking for the photo of Dean and the old team when we were in DC and posed with the cardboard cut our to President Bush because I was remembering when we went to DC for a meeting during the inauguration, and Dean didn't have a room Louella and I offered to let him sleep in our bath tub in our room, which he said NO!@ to... He camped out in the lobby and, I think, the hotel staff felt sorry for him and found him a room. Of course Dean used to tell the story slightly differently (lol). Traveling with Dean was always an adventure to be cherished. Miss you, love you dear friend!

I last saw Dean at PED in 2012, the year I left. I ran into him a few years later on the steps of the main post office in Santa Fe. And one day, after I had retired and was working during the sessions as a bill analyst for the senate, I tapped Kris Meurer´s cell number, but Dean answered, having inherited Kris´s phone. He quickly gave me her number but readily assisted me in the questions I had. My memory of Dean was always one of someone who was clear minded, polite, eager to help, and knowledgeable. A profound loss. Am so so sorry.

Dean and I were new friends but we caught on so quickly. My grandsons name is Dino and he took special pride in him for carrying on the name. I just loved his sense of humor. He was funny and fun and kind and warm. It was an easy friendship that really started when I spontaneously gave him a little plastic Bobs Big Boy toy. It surprised us both but we spoke of that toy as if it was our mutual friend. Whenever he called or text, the name Big Boy would come up. I will really miss his gentle voice and sweet smile . I´m holding Anthony and his entire family and friends close to my heart at this incredibly sad time. So long Big Boy.

Dino, you were the best of everything in life; since we met in 1990, while we taught together at Alameda Middle School and all the way to your appointment as Bureau Chief for the Health Department. All the wonders we´ve shared through the years will forever warm my heart. Anthony will always be your "Brightest Light" and I know you´ll shine your light on him.
Don´t worry, I promise to stay close.
Thank you for being you... always!!

I met Dean when I went to work as a nurse at Pediatric Intensive Care at UNM in 1983. Dean was our secretary. Late in a disastrous shift soon after, I began singing "I could have Danced all Night, " from Broadway's My Fair Lady.". Dean joined in. From them on, we sang show tunes forever and became best friends. All these years we have continued to sing and be there for each other through thick and thin. I give thanks that he loved me as much as I will always love him.

Dean was the first person I met 43 years ago when I moved to NM. We became instant friends, cohorts, compadres, roommates, and each others touchstone. Irreplaceable. I don´t have the words to sum him up perfectly. He was a bright light to all who met and loved him. He was Nani/Uncle Dino to my girls. My man of honor. One of the best people I have ever met. My heart is broken. Blessing and prayers to Terri, Anthony, and all who loved him.
