GARY HASS Obituary
GARY EDWARD HASS
December 13, 1940 - March 2, 2025
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, on March 2, 2025, Gary Edward Hass passed away peacefully with family in attendance. He was eighty-four years old.
Born on December 13, 1940, in Texhoma, Oklahoma, Gary was the youngest of ten children of Thornton and Vera Hass. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice, and all nine of his siblings.
Gary is survived by his longtime partner, Pauline; his children, Mary, Aline, and Gary Jr.; and his three stepchildren, Linda, Rae, and Brenda. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews with whom he remained close.
Gary joined the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served aboard the USS John A. Bole (DD-755) and the USS Charles F. Adams (DDG-2). During his service, he participated in significant operations such as the recovery of the Mercury 8 space mission and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Gary was honorably discharged and will be buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery with military honors.
After serving his country, Gary began a life of hard work, adventure, and curiosity-and he flourished in retirement. Upon relocating permanently to Española in the early 1990s, he pursued his many passions and interests, including woodworking, needlework, caning, horology (watch and clock repair), photography, firearms, hunting, fishing, boating, travel, reading Louis L'Amour books, and making new friends.
Later in life, Gary was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and became a member of Holy Family Church in Chimayó, NM. He practiced and took great comfort in his faith until his passing.
Gary often said he never missed many meals and was always happy to share what he had. He faithfully said grace before every meal, never forgetting to include the following:
"Please watch over our first responders, clergy, service personnel-wherever they are. The sick and afflicted when they call your name, and those in need of your guiding hand. Amen."
A celebration of Gary's life will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó (Rosary at 8:15 a.m., just prior), followed by an 11:00 a.m. interment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
