Jacques Lacoste Obituary

Jacques Lacoste He passed away October 22, 2008 in Plassac, France, three miles from his birthplace. Jacques was born September 21, 1938 in Blaye, France. In 1960 he immigrated to the United States, and began working at the French Consulate in Los Angeles, California. In the late sixties he attended beauty school, where he graduated as a professional hairdresser. He began his forty-year hairdressing career in Hollywood with numerous film and theatrical stars as his clients. He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in March of 1971, opening his first shop in the La Fonda Hotel. While vacationing in Hawaii in 1978 he met the love of his life, Patrice Morelli. Jacques opened a hairdressing shop with Patrice in 1986 and they operated it together for two decades. The shop was well known in northern New Mexico as a place for energetic discussion among interesting people, about politics, art, culture, world travel and good food. Jacques's passion about politics spurred him to become an American citizen in 1980, and to celebrate the event he made a special trip to visit Washington, DC. His other passion was collecting art. His collection included the works of many Native American and New Mexican artists whom he knew personally. The shop closed upon their retirement in October of 2006. In April of 2007 Jacques and his partner moved to Plassac, and purchased an historic home, La Mothe, surrounded by vineyards and overlooking a bucolic river valley. Jacques will be laid to rest in the family mausoleum in Plassac. In addition to being survived by his partner, Patrice, he is also survived by an older sister, a nephew, and two nieces. Written condolences may be sent to: Patrice Morelli, La Mothe 33390, Plassac, France In lieu of flowers please send donations to: Assistance Dogs of the West PO Box 31027 Santa Fe, NM 87594

Dearest Patrice,

I have learned that Jacques died last month. I am so, so sorry. He was a beautiful man. You had 30 years together, but I know for you it was not enough - and of course it was not.

I had not planned to be in Santa Fe in January, but if you tell me your dates I will come and hope to see you. I would like you to see the new guesthouse we have built. Should you return to Santa Fe all your friends would welcome you.

Please extend my condolences to others in Jacques's family. And to you, again, I am so, so sorry and so very sad. Yours, Elizabeth

It is with great sadness that I read of Jacques' passing. I will always remember his great laugh, generous spirit, insightful conversation and his love for Patrice. We had fun meeting at Patrick Smith Park and walking our small dogs in the snow. You will be missed by all. I will keep you in my heart, Patrice.

It was so sad to read of Jacques passing, but I am happy that he and Patrice made it back to France. I started going to him when he was at La Fonda. Jacques was a true artist, and a lovely and loving, giving man. Just to see him made you feel better about yourself.
