JAMES MAFCHIR Obituary
James Edward Mafchir a native New Yorker, moved to New Mexico in the early 1970's where he quickly started establishing his roots - marrying various passions including publishing, Jewish history, and the great outdoors. He contributed to the founding of the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society and the New Mexico Book Association. After establishing his career as the head of the publishing division for the New Mexico Museum, he established Red Crane Press and then Western Edge Press, both businesses focused on publishing books that celebrated the history and culture of the Southwest.
Jim's zest for adventure never ceased. His love of the mountains took him skiing, trekking, and climbing across the globe. In every location, he would form friendships, and enjoy the local cuisine, and culture.
James Mafchir is survived by his daughters, Anna Mafchir and Samantha Albery, and his four grandchildren, Logan and Quinn Mafchir-Werth, Jude and Oliver Albery.
A memorial to celebrate Jim's life will be held in the mountains this spring. An announcement will be published in the beginning of March.

I worked with Jim for more than 20 years. He cared deeply about New Mexico and enjoyed publishing books that delved into local history, culture, and language. We worked together well, and I will miss him. RIP, old friend.

As head of Museum of New Mexico Publications, Jim became responsible for my work at the Press of the Palace of the Governors, the museum's working historic print shop. We had our share of quibbles and rewarding collaborative projects and remained friends as museum veterans. I admired his capacity to revel in wilderness experiences despite the challenges they brought him. He will forever be part of my memories.

What a great friend. We hiked, dined, rock climbed and enjoyed his company. When we go to Santa Fe there will be a huge gap in our visit
