Mia Gibbons Obituary

Mia Gibbons Age 74, of Cambridge, MD, died at her home Tuesday night, July 29, 2008. Born on March 7, 1934 in Bunde, Holland, she was the daughter of the late, Servatius Hubertus Luyten and Maria Hurbertina Frissen. As a child Mia was confronted with the adversity and unpredictability that was part of daily life during the German occupation of Holland. On August 10, 1957, she married, Airman Bernard David Gibbons, Jr. (USAF) at St. Servaas Church in Vrijthof Square, Maastricht, Holland. This Catholic Church was built in a gothic style back in the year 1000. It's the only church in the Netherlands that was built on the grave of a saint, in this case St. Servatius. Mr. and Mrs. Gibbons resided in Germany, and in 1960 they moved to Washington, DC. She had been employed as a claims examiner and adjuster for APWU (American Postal Workers Union) and New York Life Insurance Company. In 1978, they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mia was a volunteer and member of the St. Vincent Hospital Womens Auxiliary. She had also worked in the finance department at the Bank of Santa Fe. In 1999, they moved back to Washington, DC. For the couple's love of the water and space, they had lived in Talbot and Dorchester Counties and for the past three years made Dorchester their permanent home. No matter where the Gibbons called home, they were always blessed by the many friendships they had made. Mia had also been a member of the Easton Club East Bridge Group. Mia was a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Golden Hill, MD. An avid gardener, Mia also had an eye for interior design and fashion. She enjoyed taking care of her home and her personal flare is present in every room. Surviving is her husband of fifty years, B. David Gibbons, Jr. of Cambridge, MD; four children: David Gibbons and his wife Ann of Fall Church, VA, Patricia Gibbons of Santa Fe, NM, Pierre Gibbons and his friend Jerri of Baltimore, MD, and Mia Engel and her husband Seth of Washington, DC; ten grandchildren: Conor Gibbons and his wife Caitin, Melea Gibbons and her companion Joe Vieth, David Gibbons and his wife Ingrid, Jeremiah Gibbons, Hannah Martinez, Kyle Martinez, Hasya Gibbons, Taylor Gibbons, Max Engel, and Coltrane Engel; a sister, Ans VanDam-Luyten of Maastricht, Netherlands; nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death, besides her parents, was her son, Christopher Gibbons; two sisters: Elizabeth Klapdor, Julie L. Aerts; and a brother, Pierre J. Luyten. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Noon on Saturday, August 2nd at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Golden Hill, MD. With certain faith, Mia knew someday she would be reunited with her son, Christopher, in heaven. In celebration of the reunion of a mother and her son, Mia requested Christopher also be recognized at the mass. Celebrant of the mass will be the Rev. William J. Lawler, assisted by Deacon Robert Paulocci. Inurnment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733 or to the St. Mary Star of the Sea Foundation c/o Mrs. Sara Applegarth, PO Box 187, Fishing Creek, MD 21634. Dave, Davey, Patty, Pierre, and Mia,
My thoughts and prayers are very much with all of you. Mia was an amazing woman who met each one of her life's challenges with courage, faith and strength. She was an inspiration to me. Her thoughtfulness in the past few weeks touched me deeply. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. Our families have shared so much over the years, weddings, births, divorces, deaths and even houses. I love you all!!! May God hold each of you close at this time.

Daughter Mia, so sorry about your loss of a GREAT and major figure in your life. Didn't meet your Mom but one time. Being on 42nd Pl. while you and your brothers grew up, what a wonderful time. You and your brothers were happy children, so your Mom did things right. Good for you guys. Yes, I did think about Chris, him and his Mom are now together, try and take comfort in that. I love you Mia, condolences to you and your babies. ox Lynda

Mia, Dave, Dave, Patty and Pierre, and all the Gibbons': You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this time. We loved Mia very much, she was a very special, one-of-a-kind woman who will be terribly missed. I had the distinct pleasure of spending time with her over the years and she was always so kind, friendly and happy - my fiancee Deborah also had the opportunity to meet her and agreed with me that she was a wonderful woman. Take care of yourselves, the kids and grandkids, and God Bless you. - Matt Engel and Deborah Winikoff
