Paul Geoffrey Obituary

PAUL GEOFFREY
1955–2023
Paul John Geoffrey was born and raised in England, where he lived his dream of being an actor and was known for his portrayal of Percival in Excalibur and other leading roles in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Anna Karenina, Wuthering Heights, Poirot, Inspector Morse, and more.
He moved to Santa Fe in the early 1990s where he and his wife created a world of love and care for their young family. He worked with Santa Fe Properties for many years and established himself as a genuine and kind community member. A thespian to the core, Paul continued to act for the remainder of his life. He loved French wine and food, had a stunning grasp of history, was a life-long Arsenal fan, and excelled at being the sweetest guy in the world.
Paul passed away from cancer on June 3 and is survived by his wife Sue Taylor and three children, Alex, Oliver, and Daisy.

I once worked as a stage manager for Teatro Paraguas with Paul Geoffrey during a small production and realized shortly who he was, being a fan of the film 'Excalibur.' He was kind enough to visit with me backstage regularly during the run of the show and share stories of his career.

I just found out that Paul passed away and I am deeply saddened. Back in 2015 I rewatched a childhood favorite movie, Excalibur, and found myself studying the performances and thinking of the meaning behind it all more than simply watching it for the story as before. What I found was that Paul was really amazing in bringing the quiet and sincere goodness that Percival was meant to embody, being the only Knight of the Round Table worthy of achieving the holy grail. I was inspired to research Paul's life and somehow ended up finding an email address for his real estate business. I took a chance and emailed him... within hours he responded! And to my utter surprise and pleasure he asked if I wanted him to call me so we could chat! It was such an honor and the thrill of a lifetime to speak with him about his life and especially his experiences making one of my favorite films of all time. What a lovely and kind gentleman he was. I dared not reach out to him again for fear of being thought of as a nuisance, but now I wish I had if only to tell him again what his performance continues to bring to me all these years later, and what our conversation meant to me. I will treasure my very brief moment in his universe, and always remember him with respect and appreciation for his kind gesture to a stranger. Rest in Peace, dear sir.

A very sad day for those of us left here on earth. A brief moment in the warmth of Paul's smile, the sunshine a greeting from him brought into one's heart. Always kind. My sincere condolences to his family, who know more than all the rest of us how much he will be missed.

As a fellow member of Group 12 of the Drama Center London, I am devastated to hear the sad news of Paul's passing.

I have many memories of him, but the one in particular which has stayed with me to this very day and will do so for as long as I draw breath, is a most beautiful piece of music "Albinoni's adagio in g minor" .

Without fail , every time I hear it , I immediately think of Paul.

Good bye my friend. You helped, among others, make my 3 years at Drama Center a period in my life that would help shape my future .

I will miss you , as will Paddy Madras ( an in joke to a select number of people who laugh every time that the story is resurrected)

Good bye.

Gone , but never forgotten

Excalibur will always be the greatest Camelot film. And as Percival, he was the noblest of all Knights. Defended the Queen, finds the Grail, saves Arthur, and sees that the sword is safe guarded. Paul was brilliant in the role, What a Knight and man should be. I will so miss him.

Pual was one of the most authentic people I´ve known. Even when we should have been on a work-related topic, our conversations would happily turn to more important things; culture, his passion for stage and screen and doing the right thing. I will miss this true gentleman that walked among us.

Paul was a gem of a person. Whenever I´d see him, it always felt like his attention and interest was right there, between us. He really cared about being in that moment, no matter how brief or unexpected. Thanks for that Paul. Smooth sailing my friend.

As I presently reside in Scotland for creative work, soon to return to NM, it is with the DEEPEST of SORROW to hear today of beloved Paul passing. Sue, my heart goes out to you and the children. Now, beautiful adults. Paul last corresponded @ one year ago via email. As always, his words were so succinct and amusing. Aaah, a joyous banter ! He was so pleased to hear of the relocation to the British Isles. Memories shared of where to go, what to see and what to drink. His ole stomping grounds, sights and wonders. Like few on this stunning planet - you could always feel Paul's HEART, his exquisite kindness (gentle, witty and real ) no matter what day, occasion, circumstance, place or space. Paul IS and will always be our immortal beloved. He IS and will always be a cherished friend: And, the man we ALL adored. I am heart broken to hear this news today unexpectedly via the Daily Mail and the New Mexican. It's rather excruciating, frankly. No words. All I do know is that Paul is alive STILL and shall remain so . . . Nestled with us for the rest of our lives. A smile remains fore Paul is near. Here, to the bone . . . forever. Always, Mlle. Dianne Elise Strauss in Ecosse.

I met Paul back in 2012 when i had joined Santa Fe Properties. Paul was one of the kindest people I´ve ever met. He always had a smile on his face and made sure to say hello, anytime we were both in the office or out in the field. I only recently heard of Paul´s illness and was incredible sad when i heard of his passing. Paul proved there are still kind hearted, good humans out there. You will missed my friend. Condolences to the entire family.

I am grateful because I got a chance to meet with Paul Geoffrey over coffee and get to know him, just a little. I wrote a story for the New Mexican when an arthouse cinema was showing Excalibur in 2015. It was part of a mini-John Boorman fest. He introduced the film. Helping to make that night happen and getting a chance to speak with him over an Americano and hear all about the non-stop rain in the Wicklow Hills, extant medieval forests, and his comradery with the rest of the cast was one of the greatest privileges of my life. Godspeed Mr. Geoffrey.
