RICHARD ROSE Obituary

RICHARD ROSE
1950 - 2023
Rich passed away in May of 2023. He was born and grew up in Sacramento, CA. Rich was the oldest of five children. As the oldest he was a natural leader and role model for his siblings - traits that served him throughout his life.
Rich graduated from McClatchy High School and attended UC Davis completing an MS degree in Environmental Engineering. He later received a PhD in Engineering Management. Rich was also a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps.
His career included working for the California State Water Board, private engineering firms in Grand Junction, CO and Albuquerque, NM as well as jobs in the New Mexico Department of Environment and State Engineer's Office.
Rich enjoyed the outdoors and was a member of the Sierra Club. He led a 30 day backpacking trip to clean up the Warner Wilderness. He loved his dogs and trail riding on horseback. He volunteered for the Red Cross training people in CPR and was a regular blood donor.
Rich was a bright thoughtful person with integrity and spent his life preserving the environment for future generations.
Rich was pre-deceased by his first wife and pre-deceased his brother. He is survived by his two sisters and brother. In the last few years, Rich was limited from communicating with his family, and they only recently found out about his passing. We miss his humor and love, as family was important to him.
Donations can be made to the American Red Cross and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

We were roommates at U C Davis and backpacking partners all over the mountains of California. I did the Sierra Club cleanup trips with him in the Warner Mountains. We camped all over. This is a total shock, I went to his wedding. I worked for his father as a surveyor. I was a pallbearer at his cousin's funeral.

My heart hurts to hear of Rich's passing. I became friends with Rich when he married my good high school friend Barb. When I was still living in California, Rich and I drove together from Sacramento to Grand Junction in my little beat up Toyota. I always laugh when I remember how it broke down in the middle of the night near Tonopah, Nv. Rich looked at me and asked where the flashlight was. I told him I didn't have one and he quietly said, "Got any matches?" I handed him a roll of paper towels. We made it into Grand Junction and before I left to go back to California a few days later Rich (without telling me) put an emergency road kit in my car. Rest in Peace Dear One. You are missed.

So sorry to hear of Rich's passing. There were four of us (Rich, Andy, Barb & me) who met and became dear friends while working at UCDPD during our college years. I will carry the love and memories of them all for the rest of my days.

Dr Rose taught me a lot about leadership and taking charge. He promoted me into management seeing something in me that I couldn't see myself. After he had a stroke he had a hard time taking so we would share emails. I'll always keep that Big Bird he left on my desk. It kind of reminded me of him. He was a smart man and I'll miss him. Rest in peace Dr. Rose
