STEVE MCCLURE Obituary

STEVE MCCLURE
AUGUST 2, 1953 - DECEMBER 30, 2022
Santa Fe - John Stephen "Steve" McClure, 69, of Santa Fe, passed away on December 30, 2022. Steve was born on August 2, 1953, in Big Spring. TX. He moved to Albuquerque in 1963 and was smitten with the Land of Enchantment for the rest of his life. He impacted the state's farm and ranch community as a steward of its animals and in the preservation of its land, including his success in passing a bill that protects The Santa Fe Trail on private land.
Steve graduated from Highland High School in 1971 and attended Texas Tech for one year. He worked several jobs, including shoeing horses as a certified farrier, and he went on to study Agricultural Economics at New Mexico State University. Steve worked for the Farm Bureau as an Organizational Director and Lobbyist in the New Mexico Legislature. He and his family then moved to the Red River Ranch near Springer where he was manager and later partner. Steve also served as Chairman of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Board under the Gov. Garrey Carruthers administration from 1987 to 1991.
Steve was an avid hunter, and he traveled to South Africa often. He hosted a yearly pronghorn antelope hunt and enjoyed cooking and storytelling with friends. He was a voracious reader from a young age, and he loved all varieties of music to fit whatever mood he happened to be in.
Steve was predeceased by his father, R.E. McClure, his nephew, Stephen Perkins, and his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Pete. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Zimmerman of Flower Mound, TX, her children and grandchildren; mother, Billie Connell of Chattanooga, TN; daughters, Sarah Duncan of McKinney, TX, and Rebecca (Jojo) Pfahler of Pilot Point, TX; granddaughters, Katie Elizabeth and Laura Kelly Duncan of McKinney, TX; sisters, Mary Lynn "Mimi" (Bob) Perkins of Irving, TX, and Amy Dee (AJ) Monsees of Chattanooga, TN; nieces, Emily (Noel) Janacek of Lewisville, TX, and Rachel (Russ) Harwood of Signal Mountain, TN; nephew, Evan Monsees, of Chattanooga, TN; great-nephews, Shane, Troy, Bo and Gus Janacek of Lewisville, TX; and former wife, Karen W. McClure of Pilot Point, TX. He also leaves behind many dear friends, including those in South Africa and across the state of New Mexico.
Services will be held at a later date. Please check Legacy.com for further information.

We were saddened to hear about Steve's death. Our daughter Rachel and Sarah were friends in pre-school and through them, we got to know the family and spent fun times together. Once on the ranch near Springer, Steve took us all out to the rim of the Canadian River, which was spectacular and we (adults) drank whiskey while enjoying the view! Our deep condolences to Sarah, Rebecca, Karen and Lisa and to the rest of his family and many friends. Tom and Mary Dixon, Santa Fe, NM
