1931 - 2024
Alice 'Lollie ' Schentrup, age 92, of Santa Maria, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2024 surrounded in love by her family.
Lollie was born on May 31, 1931, in Syracuse, NY to Claramae and Allen Haines. Growing up in Syracuse along with her older sister Catherine (Peggy), she attended and graduated from St. John's Catholic Academy. After graduating from Central City Business Institute, she worked for the New York Telephone Company.
Lollie was married to John M. Schentrup for 68 years and together they created a beautiful life filled with love and devotion. John's career in the Navy moved them from New York, briefly to Hawaii and then to California where they settled for 17 years. In that time, they were blessed with 7 children. Again moving for work, they remained in Las Cruces, NM for 23 years before returning to Santa Maria.
Devoted to her faith, Lollie was an active member of her church community wherever she lived. She also loved the ocean and the outdoors, enjoying picnics at many beautiful spots wherever their travels took them. Her kind spirit, thoughtful ways and quick humor always made others feel at ease around her. Treasuring time with friends and family, she traveled, as able, to celebrate various life events of her children and grandchildren.
Lollie leaves behind a big legacy of love and family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband. She is survived by her dear sister Catherine O'Brien of Syracuse, NY, her children: MaryBeth, John (Ruth), Catherine (David), Paul, Susan (Scott), Allen and Erin (Dandee) and their families. Her presence will be greatly missed by her sister, children, 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Lollie's generosity, compassion, creativity, humor, and faith had a great impact on those who knew her. She will be remembered fondly and cherished always. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday May 27th at St. Louis de Montfort Church followed by a niche side service at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary's Memory Gardens at 2:30 pm.
