Alvin (Al) Fumia
January 1, 1932 - October 7, 2021
Al Fumia 89, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 7, 2021. He was a lifelong resident of Santa Maria Ca. He was born to Giovanni and Ida Fumia and was the youngest of 7 siblings. Al lost both of his parents at a young age and was raised by his Uncle Serafino and Aunt Carolina Giovanacci.
He graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1951
Al worked for many years as a truck driver for Souza Poultry. In 1976 he went to work for Far West Cooling and helped build the cooler from the ground up where he latter retired.
Al was a man of many talents, but the love he had for his family was always first and foremost. He met the love of his life Betty May Bishop and married on April 28, 1957.
Al loved so many things. You could find him out in the sand dunes driving his dune buggy, tinkering on a car in the garage, playing with the electrical or plumbing, or working in his yard. There wasn't much that Al didn't do.
Al loved to play horseshoes; he is the 1989 State of California Champion. He was a member of Ronnie Souza's racing team in the 60's. He loved watching Nascar and Football on TV, he was a Rams fan since his youth. Al was his grandkids number one supporter in sports, there was never a baseball, softball, soccer, or football game that he was not at. He sponsored his grandson Bubba's baseball team Fumia Bros. at West Side Little League. When his grandson Travis played football, he was the unofficial Team Grandpa.
He was 52-year member to the Elks Club, as well as a longtime member and past president of the DES Club. Al loved to BBQ; he was known for his street corner BBQs for the Elks Rodeo Queen Candidates. He used to BBQ every Friday out in Guadalupe, Tri Tip sandwiches, people would line up to get one. If there was a family function you better believe Al was doing the cooking. We have some of the best memories around the BBQ pit with him.
Al is survived by his wife of 64 years Betty Fumia, daughters Pam (Jimmy) Almaguer and Sandra Fumia. Grandchildren Danniel Martinez (Craig), Philip (Bubba) Martinez (Erin), Vincent Martinez, Amanda Fumia, and Travis Fumia (Sierra). Great grandchildren Rayenessa Serna, Jasmine Serna, Dominick Serna, Robert Martinez, Calie Fumia, Zoey Ruiz, Blake Fumia, and Mckeneze Fumia and one Great Great-Grandaughter Annalisa Guerrero. His brother John Fumia. And his beloved dog Pablo.
The family would like to give a special acknowledgement to Al's granddaughter Danniel and her boyfriend Craig Padilla for the loving care they provided to him in his last and final years.
