Isamu Tomooka Obituary

Isamu "Sam" Tomooka
Isamu Tomooka, 85, passed away early Thursday morning, October 28, 2010, at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria. He was born in San Luis Obispo County on February 3, 1925. He was raised in the Santa Maria Valley and attended Arroyo Grande High School until his family was relocated to the Japanese internment camps during World War II. After release from the internment camps, the family settled in Arizona where they farmed for several years before returning to the Santa Maria area. In 1953, Isamu married Setsuye Nomura and moved to Los Angeles for one year before returning to Santa Maria to farm with his father and older brothers. He retired from farming in 1992.
Isamu was a member of the Guadalupe Buddhist Church. He was also a member of the Santa Maria Country Club where he spent many hours playing golf with his buddies. He enjoyed trout fishing in Lake Tahoe, perch fishing, working in his Japanese garden, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Isamu is survived by his wife, Setsuye; daughter Cindy Chun and husband, Ron of Palo Alto; son Martin Tomooka; grandchildren Catie and Zach Chun; brothers Suyeo Tomooka and wife Sandy of Canoga Park, Tom Tomooka and wife Nancy of Tucson, AZ, Takashi Tomooka and wife Alice; sisters-in-law Toe Tomooka and Dixie Tomooka; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father, Toyokuma Tomooka, mother, Kane Tomooka, brothers Massey Tomooka and Yoshito Tomooka, and sister Kikuye Matsumoto.
At Isamu's request, private graveside services were held on Monday, November 1, 2010. Arrangements were made by Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory and Memory Gardens.
