Johnny Simas Obituary

Johnny Marvin Simas

1931 - 2022

Johnny Marvin Simas, 91, passed away peacefully in his home on November 28, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Johnny was born on September 2, 1931, to John and Geneva (Flood) Simas in San Luis Obispo, California. Johnny was the youngest of four children.

Johnny attended local grammar schools and graduated from Santa Maria High School with the class of 1950. He participated in Santa Maria Future Farmers of America and served as president in 1949-1950. Johnny married his high school sweetheart, Nadine Virginia Barca, in 1952 and was married for 48 years until her passing in 2001. Johnny met Carol Ann Baughman at Mule Days in Bishop, California, in 2003 and they were married in 2004.

Johnny was proud to have served as Sergeant First Class in the United States Army in the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged. After returning home to Santa Maria, he and his wife, Nadine, raised their three daughters, Debbie, Carol, and Cindy, whom they loved dearly.

Johnny was a hard worker his entire life. Beginning at a young age, he would help at the family dairy, bail hay as a ranch hand on local ranches, and work on electrical equipment repairs at the local hardware store. His electrical work inspired Johnny to complete the apprenticeship program and start his career as an electrician at Santa Maria Electric. Johnny had a fulfilling career, managed many projects as a General Foreman, and retired after 30 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W). Johnny's workday continued on into many evenings and weekends where he spent time irrigating pastures and crops, caring for his horses, and raising livestock.

Johnny was very active and a member of many clubs including the Santa Maria Elks Lodge #1538, D.E.S. Club, Santa Maria Men's Club, Eagles, V.F.W., American Legion Post #534, Santa Maria Valley Sportsman Association, Vaqueros De Los Ranchos-Portuguese Camp, Back Country Horseman, Cattlemen's Association, Santa Maria Valley Pioneer Association, and the National Rifle Association.

Johnny lived life to the fullest. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, packing horses in the backcountry, family rodeos, cattle branding, and attending the annual National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas. Johnny took pride in working his land and orchard, as well as pruning his trees. He loved a celebration of any kind, the many Santa Maria Style BBQs with the crew, and spending time at his Nacimiento Lake property. Johnny enjoyed listening to country music, watching his Westerns, dancing, singing, and playing instruments with his musical family. He was quite the storyteller and loved to talk about his family history, especially his Portuguese and Swiss heritage. He had a sense of humor that always had his family and friends laughing. Johnny was proud and loved going to support his grandkids and great-grandkids at many races and games. Johnny loved and adored his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, who called him Papa and Ol Papa.

Rest in peace, Dad. We will forever remember you and love you always.

Johnny is preceded in death by his late wife, Nadine Simas; his parents, John and Geneva Simas; his brothers, Edward Simas and Wilfred Buddy Simas; and his sister, Dolores Killgore.

Johnny is survived by his current and loving wife, Carol Simas, his three daughters and sons-in-law; Debbie and Roger Silva, Santa Maria, California; Carol and Mike Kendrick, Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Cindy and Will Roland, Meridian, Mississippi; his grandchildren, Nick Kendrick (Jenny), Brandon Kendrick (Kelsey), Shawn Silva, Christopher Roland and Emily Roland Luth (John); and his great-grandchildren, Carter Kendrick, Caylin Kendrick, Ryleigh Kendrick, Brynn Kendrick, Harper Kendrick, Scotty Silva, and Dustin Silva.

A special thank you to his loving caregivers Tiffany, Yolanda, Juana, and Luanne of Family Home Care, along with his nurse, Mia, at Central Coast Hospice.

My condolences to the family in this time of reflection.

Some people you meet in life are just truly special.

Johnny was one of those from the day I first met him. From working with him in Santa Maria and VAFB, hunting trips, fishing trips, backcountry trips, BBQ'ing, Vaqueros, late night partying, and saving me in the Manzana; he was a great friend.

I wont be able to be there in person on Friday, but will be there in spirit. Have a safe journey Johnny, and I will meet you down the trail !
