Brian Dougan Obituary

NORFOLK, Va. - Brian J. Dougan, 37, of Norfolk, Va., completed his earthly journey and joined his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, after a valiant battle against cancer.
He was born April 4, 1975, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the son of Patrick and Sue Dougan.
Brian grew up in the Adirondacks and loved camping, the outdoors and his many friends. He graduated with honors from Corinth Central School in 1993. In 1997, he was an honor graduate at Long Island University - CW Post campus where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
His work experience included Camp E-tik-etu in White Lake, N.C., a camp for at-risk youth. He spent two years at the Frost Valley YMCA camp. While living in the Adirondacks, he spent two years as program director at Upward Bound. He then spent a year as an EMT of CVPH. During this time, Brian's wife, Ellon, was employed by Families First in Elizabethtown. From here they moved to Branchville, N.J., where Brian was employed by Rutgers University as assistant director of the Lindley G. Cook Outdoor Center.
Brian also wished to serve his country, and began his military career in 2009 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Ellon; his infant daughter, Flannery Olivia, born May 2, 2012; his sister, Heather of Baltimore; and his parents of Westport.
Throughout his life, Brian was truly a leader, mentor and friend.
Donations in his memory may be made to: Livestrong Philly 2012: Team Dougan.
This year, Brian's wife, daughter, family and friends will be participating in the Livestrong Challenge in his memory. Brian rode the 100-mile course several times prior to being diagnosed with cancer.

Brian you are truly an inspiration to everyone that knew you and the world was a better place with you in it. Whenever I'm whining about my day or don't feel like working out, I think of you and you make me push myself and I thank you for that. You will always be missed and I'll always remember how positive and uplifting you were to be around. You always made me laugh. God bless you and your family!

The first and only time I physically was with Brian was at a St. Pat's parade party day in Albany with his sister Heather and her good friend Jim, who is now my wonderful husband. In the past several years, since his first diagnose, he has been a FB friend. Sounds superficial, but not so with Brian. He made such an impact in my life - I saw his positive spirit swarm everywhere in every day and in every way he touched people, for years now. It is still there and will continue. Your spirit will LIVESTRONG -
