Sylvia Heiner Obituary

Saratoga Springs – Sylvia Ann (Kennedy) Heiner, loving wife and mother, passed away peacefully at home on December 1st, 2020. She was surrounded by her family and caregivers. Sylvia was born in Schenectady to the late James F. Kennedy and Geraldine (Fancher) Kennedy. She was predeceased by her sister Diane (Kennedy) King. Sylvia was a graduate of Mohonasen High School and attended Potsdam State University and graduated from Plattsburgh State University with a BA in English. A consistent honor student, she earned an MA in English and Education at SUNY Albany. Sylvia fulfilled a lifelong desire to become a teacher. Her career began at St. Helens School in Schenectady. She went on to teach English at Linton High School. Prior to retirement, her 35-year teaching career included reading recovery at Woodlawn Elementary School. Sylvia loved the arts. She performed in numerous plays and productions in both high school and college. She was a patron at Proctors Theater, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, FL. Sylvia loved to garden, and her homes always featured numerous perennial and annual flowers in beautiful combinations. Sylvia loved people. Her family and friends were the most valued part of her life. As the matriarch of her extended family, she loved to host gatherings on every holiday. Her homes were always extensively decorated for the upcoming celebrations. Summers were highlighted by family and friends attending various gatherings at her camp on Galway Lake. Sylvia loved animals. There was never a time when her household contained less than two dogs (mostly shelties). In addition, there was an occasional cat, several parakeets, a bunny, and a beloved French bulldog. She loved her retired thoroughbred horse, “True Pleasure.” The appropriately named ‘pet’ was schooled by Sylvia to provide kisses on command in return for a carrot snack. Sylvia was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer in January of 2019. Her focus from that point became a courageous and thorough quest for a cure. Her keen intellect and research stamina resulted in direct care and treatment at major cancer centers in New York, Boston, Houston, West Palm Beach, and Saratoga Springs. She became a motivational and informed patient who helped other people with this dreaded disease and exceeded a life expectancy from the experts by one and a half years. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassion and care provided by Doctor Edward Liebers and Cristine Jenack at Saratoga Hospital, as well as the exceptional home care provided by Rachael Colucciello. Sylvia is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul, and her sons Paul and Mark. She is also survived by her sisters Cynthia (Kennedy) Cheney and Ramona (Kennedy) Carson as well as many nieces and nephews. Given pandemic concerns unprecedented, Sylvia’s family wishes to greatly acknowledge the outpouring of love and support they have received from family and friends near and far. They ask to please consider, in lieu of flowers, making a donation to the Saratoga Hospital Foundation (211 Church Street Saratoga Springs NY 12866) or a charity of your choice. A small visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, December 8th, 2020 from 5-7pm at William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373). A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 9th, 2020 at 10am at St. Clements Church (231 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs) by the Very Reverend James Ebert, pastor. So that persons may attend safely from remote locations, this service will be live streamed on www.stclementschurch.com. Please then click “Facebook Livestream.” Entombment will follow at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, NY.Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com. http://www.lastingmemories.com/sylvia-a-heiner

Paul,
I was so saddened to hear of Sylvia's passing. A warm, beautiful and vivacious human being, her gorgeous smile, sense of fun and laughter are how I will always remember her. I so fondly recall the many hijinks with you, Sylvia and the Saratoga-Plattsburgh gang. In your sadness, may there also be joy that you had such an amazing person to love. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Sylvia... was and will forever be my mother. I miss her in ways that are indescribable in words... they only can be express through tears. I am so grateful I had the intuition to come up to saratoga from my home in nyc... and spend every day with her in the last few weeks of her life. It was during these few weeks that although she was physically dying. The love between us was growing. She allowed me to help her... as she was getting weaker by the day... physically ... her love and ability to be loved was abundant. She wanted so badly to be able to help cook with me on Thanksgiving, but wasn’t able to. As most of you know , mom was a teacher, she’d be correcting my grammar and run-on sentences right now... probably is in spirit. She taught me how to cook.. so I was able through all those years of her
Mentoring me in the kitchen... made a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner, which, sadly, was the last solid meal where she showered, dressed, put on her make up and wig and sat at the table. Mom was all about family holidays and traditions I will carry her legacy through the rest of my life. I was there when she took her last breath. It’s just even more painful that it’s the holidays... and it’s beginning to look a lot like Sylvia/Mom... everywhere I go... so I’ll close with this simple phrase.. from kids from one to 51(me)
to 73(mom) to 92. Although it’s been said .. many times.. many ways...Merry Christmas, MOM,..to YOU... I love and miss and will always be your “little buttercup “
Love, your son Mark/Marky

Paul,
We were sorry to hear about “S”; you have our sincere condolences. Although we hadn’t seen her for a while, Sylvia’s grace, charm and generosity is something we will always remember.
Readers Digest used to periodically have a section called, “My Most Unforgettable Character”. The author would cleverly write about a non-famous person who influenced their life in an unusual way. For us this would have been Sylvia. Some people spend a lifetime trying to be different. Others are different – because they just are! That was Sylvia! She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

I loved Sylvia, she was my oldest cousin and I really didn't get to know her well until she became my 9th grade English student teacher. Then, I started babysitting for Buffy and Mark and loved interacting with the whole family. She taught me a lot, like how to write a formal letter (in class) and how to efficiently cut up an onion (in her kitchen). I wish Jerry and I had lived closer so we could have spent more time together.

Sylvia was one of the strongest and most intelligent women I've ever known. Her heart was bigger than life and matched by her fun loving spirit. My favorite memoires were the times we golfed together and her kindness to my children when we would visit briefly every Christmas Eve when they were growing up. Sylvia always greeted them with cookies and made them believe she baked just for them. Both my boys still remember those cookies and how special she made them feel. I will always hold my memories of Sylvia tightly in my heart.
