It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Neff Detweiler, 79, of Pekin, Illinois, who entered eternal rest on June 1, 2025, at Carle Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. David's life was a testament to love, dedication, and the joy of connecting with others through teaching, family, and his passions for golf and writing.
Born on February 21, 1946, in Dixon, Illinois, to Kenneth and Pearl (Neff) Detweiler, David grew up in a close-knit family, forging lifelong bonds with his three brothers. On July 21, 1984, he married Rose Mary Vigneri, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Their 40-year marriage was a beautiful partnership filled with mutual respect, shared laughter, and unwavering devotion. David is survived by his wife, Rose Mary, of Pekin; his son, Adam (Tara) Detweiler, of Austin, Texas; and his cherished grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Detweiler, also of Austin. He leaves behind three brothers: Ken (Betty) Detweiler of Centennial, Colorado; Ed (Sue) Detweiler of Dixon, Illinois; and Dr. Don (Vickie) Detweiler of Raleigh, North Carolina. David was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, who will forever treasure his warmth and wit. His faithful companion, his dog Tucker, will miss his gentle presence. David was preceded in death by his parents. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, David placed family at the heart of his life. His love for his family was evident in the traditions he cherished, particularly the annual Detweiler family reunion trips to Lakelawn Lodge in Wisconsin. These gatherings, filled with golf, storytelling, and laughter, were among his most treasured memories, strengthening the unbreakable bond he shared with his brothers. David's professional life was marked by his passion for education. A dedicated teacher in District 102 in Marquette Heights, he inspired countless students over the years with his enthusiasm, kindness, and ability to make learning meaningful. His colleagues became some of his dearest friends, and his students, whom he regarded as among his greatest treasures, often returned years later to tell him he was their favorite teacher. David's ability to connect with his students left an enduring legacy in the community. A proud alumnus of Illinois State University, David earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees and was a standout member of the ISU golf team. His love for golf, instilled by his father, was a lifelong passion. David excelled in the sport, winning several Junior Amateur Tournaments and continuing to play with skill and joy throughout his life. Whether on the fairways or in the clubhouse, his infectious humor and camaraderie made every round memorable. David was a true champion in golf and in life. He will dwell in the "clubhouse" of the Lord forever.
David was a man of many talents, with a particular gift for the written word. His eloquent and witty prose adorned countless cards and notes sent to loved ones, friends, and students, each message a reflection of his thoughtfulness and creativity. His sense of humor – sharp, warm, and ever-present – brought light to every gathering, leaving those around him smiling and uplifted. A man of deep faith, David was an active member of his church community, finding solace and purpose in his spiritual life. His generosity and compassion extended beyond his immediate circle, touching the lives of many through his encouragement and support.
